new site

Hi, I currently have a website up and running, not through wordpress. I want to build a new one myself with wordpress and woocommerce, however, this will take me some time, as I’ll be doing it bit by bit. I don’t want to move my domain name and publish anything until I’ve got it ready, what’s the best way to go about this? Thanks

    Hi,

You may create a free site here: https://wordpress.com/website-builder-website/, choose the “Private” privacy option, and add a domain name when you are ready to.

    Great, thank you :)

    You’re welcome : )

  • @alicegow just noting too, you don’t need to worry about pointing the domain to our servers until you’re ready, either. You can even transfer it to your account and still leave it pointing at the old site until you change its settings.

Let us know if you have more questions!

Hi, thanks for your help. I’ve stumbled at the first hurdle, I think this is going to be a steep learning curve! I tried to link woocommerce to the wordpress site I created, but it said:
“You’ve entered a WordPress.com site. Unfortunately, WordPress.com doesn’t allow third party plugins like WooCommerce. To use WooCommerce, you’ll need a self-hosted WordPress site. Learn more about the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted sites.”
Now, could I install wordpress on my pre-existing site, and then build new pages but and use the woocommerce feature but keep hidden until ready? The site I already have does have ecommerce functionality, but it’s extremely basic and I can only add one product photo per listing, this is why I am looking at the wordpress/woocommerce option.
Thanks for your help so far, hopefully I’ll get the gist of it soon…

  • You can use WooCommerce or any other WordPress compatible plugin on plans Business and eCommerce, so you’ll want to upgrade to start building your store.

You can read more about our plans and their features here:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Keep in mind that you have 30 days to cancel and obtain a full refund for the plan, in case you decide not to continue.

    I hope that helps :)
