  My new site is being designed. Should I transfer my site to wordpress before site is finished?

  Hi,

  Speaking user to user, I would say it would probably be easier to design your website in WordPress rather than transferring it after the fact. WordPress.com has its own user interface and a variety of themes, and there may already be something in place that has the functionality you’re trying to create. And when you transfer items to a new site, sometimes there are unforeseen adjustments that could happen out of nowhere because there are some elements that are automated, one of the prices of convenience.

  In short, I think it would be simpler to make your site in WordPress, rather than risk having to make your site twice, but ultimately the choice is yours. It sounds like you have experience in website design, so maybe you want to make sure you have things exactly where you want them first.

  Hi there,

  What exactly do you mean when you say your site is being designed?

  If you want your site to be hosted with us on WordPress.com, you need to build it on WordPress.com from the very start. You can’t design a site offline or somewhere else, and then simply transfer it to WordPress.com. If you do that, you would only be able to migrate your content to us, not the entire site with theme and customizations.

  I’m going to guess whoever is designing your new site for you is doing so using the open source WordPress.org software. In that case, you will need to set up a hosting account at a hosting provider like Bluehost, and then follow their instructions to upload your site to their servers and connect it to a domain once completed. The person building your site for you should really have explained this to you before they started the work.

  You’ll need to contact the hosting provider where you plan on hosting the site directly for advice on the best process to follow. We’re not able to help with this, though, as we have no control over WordPress sites that aren’t hosted on our servers.
