New site triggered a Google malicious site warning — bad code in template?

I recently set up a brand new WordPress.com site using the Twenty ten template (which I then switched to Chateau). From the very beginning, when I had not added any content to it and only an image, the site was assigned a Google malicious site tag and I have been unable to view it without wading through a series of dire Google warning message pages.

I have run a diagnosis using the Google Search tools, and it keeps telling me that a non-existent page has malicious code on it. The page URL they cite does not belong to my site nor does it begin with my site’s URL. Instead, it starts with the http://www.df.(followed by my base URL) plus a long series of letters and numbers.

I uploaded the verification code for Google search and asked for a security review, and am awaiting the results.

Is this default to a malicious site tag over caution on Google’s part until they crawl the site? Is it possible there was malicious code in the template? Is there a glitch in the set-up of new WordPress sites? I purchased the domain name through WordPress.com, if that matters. It is close to the name of another site (same name, but ends in .com) that I have admin access to. This site will eventually replace the .com site.

If this is something that happens now with a lot of the WordPress.com templates, I think you need to elevate how to fix the problem to your top level page instructions or otherwise highlight it. It might save people all the time and trouble and headaches I am going through right now. Obviously, no one is going to visit a site that screams “this site contains malicious code and has been hacked.”

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Sucuri has a great guide on how to check your site and it’s files and how to then request Google review your site and can remove that annoying screen.
