New stat section? Home page
-
I agree that there is weirdness as to how this new feature may be affecting the Top Post Widget results. The first post now shown in the Top Post Widget is not accurate in my situation … and It is unclear if the other posts are correctly ranked either. Something is going on relative to the widget.

I just noticed this “feature” yesterday as well and, frankly, it is meaningless to me.
My stats used to tell me what posts a user viewed, and generally, would count the current/latest post when a user entered the main page of the blog on that day.
Now, with the new system, since my main page lists the current blogpost as well as 6 previous ones, I then have no idea what was read unless the user clicks on a specific post individually. All I get now is a counter for “Home Page”. As time goes on, I’m losing good information!
Why change what wasn’t broken????

I think I have to agree with milkayphoto on this, but there doesn’t seem to be a perfect solution to the home page vs individual posts issue. Win some, lose some.

Something is not right. I noticed the same thing yesterday, but the number seem more realistic then. Today the Home Page hits are way out of whack. I checked with my trusty http://whos.amung.us/ counter and it doesn’t show the amount of visitors (over 200) that I’m supposed to be getting. Something similar to this happened a month ago or so. I didn’t have the counter then.
Something is not right, for sure…

My current stats for today indicate in the graph a total of 7 views. Below, in the top posts area, it says “7” for Home page and then “2” for my most recent post. But, if 7 plus 2 equals 9, in the graph, shouldn’t it indicate 9 total views, instead of 7? Obviously I’m not understanding, and am, in advance, thankful for any help that can be offered…so, thank you.

WordPress does say that we’ll get different results if we try to verify the calculations.
“About the math
If you try to verify our computations using the numbers in these tables you might get different results. The logic is explained here.An average is the sum of views divided by the number of days.
We exclude days prior to the first recorded view and future days.
Today (Jan 5) is excluded from averages because it isn’t over yet.
Yearly averages are computed from sums, not an average of monthly averages.
Averages are rounded to the nearest integer for display.
Gray zeroes are exactly zero. Black zeroes have been rounded down.
Percent change is computed from weekly averages before they are rounded.
Just a note: we don’t count your own visits to your blog.” -
My Top Posts widget is also showing the same post (today’s) twice. I’ve always wished WP would give us more control over the Top Posts list by allowing us to pick a time period over which the posts would be the top–for instance, “last week” or “last month.” Right now, it’s almost the same list as the Recent Posts list because it only shows the top posts from the last 24-48 hours.

I have a total of 338 page views today. The Home Page is 220 of those. All of the other views roughly make up the 18 pg view difference. My usual average is 20 to 30 total daily page views. A month ago I had a 540 day.
I believe that was s a computer gone crazy somewhere in the WP backroom. Same as today. Those views are not real.
It would be great to hear from someone at WP what is causing this.

Thank you, bats0711. I understand about trying to verify calculations, but I thought there might be an explanation for what I’m not understanding. Like, that maybe I’m misunderstanding what the numbers are about, and that there might be an explanation that would be an “a-ha” for me. Maybe there isn’t, but if anyone does have an explanation, I’d love to know what it is.

My page views have also gone through the roof today (and part of yesterday) without reason. I really wish we could use Google Analytics on the WP hosted blogs. I’d like to have a dependable view of traffic, for a variety of reasons, including knowing when it’s time to move to another hosting solution.

Wow! Lots more people read my home page each day than I ever realized! At this moment there have been 3002 home page hits out of the total of 4052 so far today.
I believe WP says it does not count web crawlers. So…do that many people come to my home page on purpose each day? Amazing!
I look forward to more posts explaining this. Thanks :-) Is there a way to figure out how many people subscribe to a blog through all the assorted readers?
-
Good advice, bats0711. I need to remember what you wrote. Thank you for reminding me of what I should be really paying attention to.

Isn’t it just total hits minus of those going to posts…?
I mean, most people goes to home page (eg) via links here.So unless thet googled and hit upon a posting, they will hit the homepage first. Isn’t that right?
So…

Does anyone have any news about the “Top Posts” issue?? My list is still totally wrong and very strange…
-
There must be a bug in the stats since introduction of ‘home page’. I had a spike of almost doubt total visits on the 5th, then today almost no visits so far overnight. Suggest WP check it, and I dont buy the earlier comment about post holiday spike which coincidentally arrived same time as the new count.
-
The change was yesterday (5th), but I saw a post-holiday spike the day before. It is real and a frequent occurrence.
-
nooo… we had a post-holiday spike on Monday, but yesterday was kind of off the charts. Seems like there is something else at play.
-
Love the new feature with the count of homepage visits. I too have had increasing spikes this week and a record day today. To all those who say it’s a mistake, I’m sticking my fingers in my ears and pretending I can’t hear them! I’ve a new book coming out tomorrow and will try to believe it’s people looking for that…
-
Well, one thing’s for sure, the “spike” is over :-(
But the “Top posts” issue remains. It’s still all wrong! Any WP people out there with an explaination??
