New Sub-Category Delay

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve read here that there can be a short delay when creating a new category or sub-category. I created a new sub-category about 20 minutes ago and Posted a new article using that category/sub-category. The drop-down menu still does not reflect the change (added “Critique” to “The Arts” category). Is this normal? (tried in three browsers with empty cashe)

    Thank you,
    Keith

If you are using the custom menu, it can be set to automatically add top level pages, but it will not add new categories automatically. Visit the custom menu page and then add that category to your menu and manually move it up and into a child position under the parent.

Thank you for replying to my question, but I’m not using a custom menu (at least I don’t think I am). My theme (Enterprise) spreads a menu of “pages” across the screen, and a spread of “categories” buttons below it. Normally, I can just add a new category and/or sub-category and they will appear as expected, as long as I have a post using those categories. Today, however, a sub-category will not show up as a drop-down (in this case “Critiques” under “The Arts”) UNLESS I add a second post. Then, and only then, will the sub-category appear in the drop-down. By the way, the new sub-category appears in all the right places on all the Dashboard screens just as if nothing is wrong, but it is not added under the Parent category button unless I add a second post to the new sub-category.

I hope that explains my problem a little better?

From the enterprise announcement blog post:

One of my favorite Enterprise features is the prominent two-level navigation with drop-down menus and, in the second level, up to 10 of your most-used categories.

The “10” apparently includes categories and subcategories. The new category won’t show till it becomes popular enough to bump out another category.

Your site looks very nice by the way. You’ve done a great job.

Thankyou, if that’s true, it explains everything. I will try dumping some to see the affect.

Yeah, it is kind of weird. My feeling is that the 10 limit should be on parent categories and that you should be able to have as many child and child of child categories as you want. The 10 total sort of limits its usefulness.

For right now I just deleted all sub-categories and sticking with the general ones. This keeps me from continually bumping into it limit. Thanks for the help … you have a good understanding of things.

How do you create a sub category. I created a category title “Calendar” and want to add additional information below it about our meetings, dates and times.
