New subscriber notifcation emails

I have been receiving two different notifications when someone subscribes to my blog. One gives me their email address and approximate location, the other simply tells me that I have a new subscriber. The first comes from WordPress.com ((email visible only to moderators and staff)), the latter comes with my blog’s name from (email visible only to moderators and staff). They both have the same subject line of “Someone subscribed to your blog.”

Why are there two different notices? Is one type for WordPress.com subscribers and the other for non-WordPress.com folks? I’d like to receive the more informative notice that contains my subscriber’s email and location for all subscriptions.

The more informative email comes from WordPress.com and looks like:

From: “WordPress.com <http://WordPress.com> ” <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>
Date: September 26, 2011 2:27:38 AM EDT

To: (email visible only to moderators and staff) <mailto:(email visible only to moderators and staff)>
Subject: [My Blog Title] Someone subscribed to your blog

Howdy,

Someone just subscribed to your blog, [My Blog Title]. This means they will be notified every time you publish a post. Congratulations. You now have xxx subscribers.

Their email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff), and they appear to be from Chicago, Illinois, United States

WordPress.com <http://WordPress.com> | Thanks for flying with WordPress!

The less informative one that comes with my blog’s name looks like:

From: My Blog Name <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>
Date: September 26, 2011 7:37:26 PM EDT
To: (email visible only to moderators and staff)
Subject: [My Blog Name] Someone subscribed to your blog

Someone subscribed to My Blog Name.

Someone just subscribed to receive an email every time you publish a post. Congratulations. You may want to visit their blog. Perhaps you’ll enjoy their blog as much as they liked yours.

I, too, would be interested in finding out more about this. Thank you in advance.

I was able to find the answer to this through creating a second account and testing a bit.

The first, longer, and more informative email is sent by WordPress when someone subscribes to follow your blog by:

• giving their email address in the “Blog Subscriptions” widget
• leaving a comment and selecting the “Notify me of new posts via email.” checkbox (this checkbox is enabled in your settings->discussion page “Show a ‘subscribe to blog’ option in the comment form” checkbox).

The shorter, less informative email is sent by WordPress when a WordPress user–a person who is logged in with a WordPress.com account–clicks

• the “Follow” button in their admin toolbar as they are on your site
• the “sign me up!” button that appears in the “Blog Subscriptions” widget to logged in users
• the “Follow” button on a user’s http://wordpress.com/#!/following/ page after searching for your site

Once a WordPress user follows your site, they have the options of selecting deliver by email (and its frequency) and delivery by instant message.
