new theme and upgrade for wordpress.com blog

  I would like to upgrade my blog. Can I do that and migrate all the articles and stats on the upgraded version. Does this change the urls for the already posted articles. I want a very basic uncluttered presentation, changeable banner photo, with four or five menu options for various categories.
