New theme is not displayed correctly

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!
For some reason that I don’t understand when changing theme instead of applying the new theme the format of the old theme is displayed.
Is there a way to reset the theme before applying a new theme?
Also, is there a way to have the Classic Editor set by default instead of the Block editor?

    Thank you.

P.s. As an example, I changed theme from Hever to Libre2 but instead of viewing the layout of the new theme it displayed to me a mix of the two themes. Site/blog is hosted by WordPress.

    @Wordpress Staff:
    1. Please let me know why don’t you test if the new themes are properly applied.
    2. The new UI is so hard to use for the new users, especially when you have to edit posts or the content of the pages.

I don’t expect someone from WordPress to answer to this post and the previous ones.

  • Hi there!

When changing a theme, you may need to set it up to get the demo look. The instructions are always on the theme page, for example:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/hever/.

Newer themes may directly add a demo homepage you can then fill in with your own content. Those pages will look mostly the same in any theme, so, again, if you’d like to achieve the demo look from the new theme, you would either need to set it up or choose its demo layout:

    https://wordpress.com/support/page-layouts/.

is there a way to have the Classic Editor set by default instead of the Block editor?

No, it’s not possible to have it set as default as it was already retired, but if you used to access the Classic Editor through WP Admin, to do it now you’d need to turn on the Advanced Navigation in your Account Settings>Dashboard Appearance. Here’s more about that:

    https://wordpress.com/support/account-settings/#dashboard-appearance.

The Classic Editor is currently available, but in the long run, you’ll want to give the full Block Editor or the Classic Block a workout as the WordPress core development team do plan to phase this editor out in the future. The more you use it, the easier it will become.
We also have a guide specifically for writers and bloggers that you can find here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor-for-writers-bloggers/.

    I hope that helps!

Themes: I was expecting that when changing a theme of a site/blog the new layout is applied. I wasn’t expected that applying a new theme will mess up everything. I always read the instructions prior to do anything, because that saves me from headache :)).

Classic Editor: I’m sorry to hear that. I already turned on that settings, but for me it is not enough.

Block Editor: I don’t like at all using the new editor. Having all those boxes flashing when selecting or inserting a block it’s very annoying.
As a side note, a friend working on a wordpress blog said to me that it is find very difficult to use the new editor. I totally agree!

Why didn’t you give users the option to choose the editor they prefer? I don’t think that phasing out a good piece of software is a good thing, but…

Anyway, thank you for your answers.

  • @fx8s The block-based themes actually can replace the front page content with sample content so your site looks like the theme. So we are definitely working on making that easier.

With an older theme like Libre 2, though, you would need to set the front page to “posts” and make sure you have some posts published.

Having all those boxes flashing when selecting or inserting a block it’s very annoying.

Click the three buttons in the upper right of the block editor. You can turn off “spotlight mode” and also pin the toolbar to the top of the page. I personally prefer it that way.
