New Theme Options

Am I the only one whos not impressed / thrilled about almost any wp theme. But doesn’t want to leave the wordpress.com ecosystem. Really wish there were better options to choose from.

Fellow user here. I understand how you feel about the themes, been there a few times. However, some of the premium themes are cool and so what I ended up doing was just using the Full site editor to rip off (sorry to say) the designs of the premium themes. Did you have a particular design in mind that you were looking to achieve?

Just looking for a blogging theme with a sidebar. But all these new themes are more artsy than functional. And it’s crazy how they can’t remake older themes with newer standards. Especially for paying customers.

Strictly speaking, to echo @codinggigi with the full site editor, you can create pretty any template. Are you able to share any examples, or designs you like the look of?

Well I’m looking for something (really wish that this theme could just be updated) https://jkundgames.net/2023/07/10/how-to-re-enable-achievements-for-minecraft-bedrock/ (this is one of my other tiny blogs)
Just wanted to point out that I don’t find it right that paying members of wordpress.com can’t pay or have a say in what type of themes get worked on or updates. Like I’d gladly pay for an updated version of theme on my little gaming site there.
And I’ve tried adding a sidebar to a newer theme. And just way too many steps / it just doesn’t have the same look at all compared to pre-built theme.

I’m not sure I understood what you meant by that. The theme in your example is not retired, so you can use it on any site you wish: https://wordpress.com/theme/baskerville-2/
To clarify, you mean to say you wish you could edit the templates of that older theme (which currently lacks that option) or did you mean something else instead?

- that theme doesn’t show up anymore when I was looking for a theme. in fact most seem to be retired. And replaced with odd artsy ones.
- I’m trying to be as clear as I can. As support keeps saying to just follow this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/site-editor/add-a-sidebar/ for any site to create a side bar. And it’s just too complicated now as the guide is missing steps for the new sites coming out to use. Again, there’s way too many steps just to add a simple staple theme elements that websites have had. And it’s frustrating with how much I’m paying per year. $96 *3 and the editor is becoming more complicated to use. And I’m either forced to pay for a pro or leave the platform, just to get my site to look a certain way.

But thank you @staff-totoro for the link to the baskerville 2 theme. As that’s sort of theme I’m looking. But that fact I can only find that theme via your link is very concerning. And i’m even more worried now about the future.

Can you clarify how you’re searching? When I logged into your account and searched for “Baskerville” under Appearance -> Themes, the theme showed up for me.

when I was looking for a new theme and using the filters for such as right side bar that wasn’t showing.
it only started showing up in the search after I clicked on the link. And I’m content with theme. But once that one gets retire as well. If things don’t improve, I’m probably gonna leave.

I understand what you mean; it’s partly due to the fact that the newer themes are quite flexible and can be very customised (as
codinggigimentioned above) which means that they’re flexible enough that you could create your own layout to include a sidebar.That said, I do understand that it’s something not everyone would want to get into. We’re always happy to pass on feedback to the team about what might be useful in terms of theme features, so we’ll add your comments to the feedback.
