New Themes for Bloggers & Retired Themes

    Hi!

    This is just a continuation of my Twitter thread, in which you suggested creating a forum thread: https://twitter.com/CPMountains/status/1154826677857476608

    In summary, I’ve always loved the Harmonic theme since it first released, but as it’s retired, it’s being affected more and more by bugs. Whether it be adverts overlapping:

    or issues with scrolling on mobile, or pullquote styling not being reflective of the styles in the editor. Most of these could be fixed with some minor CSS changes, with a few exceptions (such as the scrolling), but many of us (including myself) don’t have access to custom CSS, yet these issues aren’t really enough to justify a new forked edition of a theme, which leaves an awkward position.

    One solution I would like to see would be allowing anyone to use custom CSS exclusively for bug fixes. But I appreciate that might be a bit ambitious. Another solution could be allowing some way to allow the community to contribute to retired themes as they’re not Automattic’s priority, though I understand it’s not plausible to add all the free themes to the GitHub repository.

    I also appreciate that the most the newer themes seem more designed and targeted to benefit businesses, and sadly that seems at the expense of themes designed for blogs. It’d be nice to see the Theme Directory opened up to external authors if there’s no plans for themes for bloggers in the near future.

    Thanks! :)

  • Good morning –

    Thanks for getting in touch and for the ideas. We always welcome feedback and appreciate your time. I’ll pass this post along but can’t make any promises about immediate changes.

    @torres126,

    Hi. How did you include an image in the OP above?

    Hi! :) By copying this: (sorry, I’m assuming the actual HTML tags won’t work in the forums)

    You just need to replace the URL with your own image. You could upload the image to a site’s Media Library to get that URL, but I upload mine to a Discord channel.

    Thanks! I think it might be the first image I’ve seen in the forums here in 8 years. : -)

    Guess I’d never thought of trying an image HTML before. Everybody uses links to screenshots instead here.
