New to CSS

So I downloaded a CSS template and when I tried to use it, it made everything jumbled. What am I doing wrong?

A link to your wordpress.com-hosted blog might help…

CSS is theme dependent. In other words, the CSS you are trying to use would have to be written specifically for the theme, and version you are trying to apply it to.

Sorry, here’s the wordpress however I changed the theme back. perideaudesigns.wordpress.com.

Thesacredpath – can you elaborate? The template was downloaded from http://www.jillij.com. And when I save the CSS code and refresh it’s deleted??

First off, do you have the paid CSS upgrade? If not, you cannot save changes to the CSS

Jillij templates are for the self-hosted single-user version of wordpress, not the modified multi-user version here at wordpress.COM. The templates and CSS here are modified and altered and you cannot use the CSS from a self-hosted blog here or, like you have found, things will get messed up. Also, Jillij is a complete theme package with all the PHP files which means there is a high likelihood that they have modified those files as well

If you are good with CSS, you can probably take the downloaded CSS file and use it as a guide for making changes to the CSS on Kubrick or K2 or possibly the Contempt, theme here, but it would be quite a bit of work, and it may be that you cannot get exactly what Jillij has. Kubrick is an absolute mess to work with as it is a very early theme and the designer has done some really strange things with the CSS.

There are several sticky threads at the top of the CSS forum that explain exactly how the upgrade works and what you can and can’t do with CSS. It would be worth reading those first.

Thanks thesacredpath, I had no idea! I’ll stick to the free templates, in over my head.
