New to Custom CSS, May Have Broken Dashboard – HELP

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello all,

I am a former Tumblr user who recently decided to start a new blog with WordPress.

I have pretty good working knowledge of CSS, but am not so well-versed with the WordPress interface/dashboard.

I found a minimalist two-column template that I like, so the next step was to customize it with my own graphics, fonts, colors, etc.

In order to do so, I purchased the Customize CSS product through WordPress.

However, this seems to have broken my Appearances > Themes functionality. Here are the problems I need help with:

    1. When trying to Activate a pre-made WordPress theme, I am taken to a blank screen (I forgot what I was supposed to see after clicking “Activate” – perhaps a preview of my blog with the new theme? Anyway, I no longer get taken to a webpage).

    2. When previewing the new template, without any changes made to the CSS, the columns in a two-column theme are shown consecutively instead of side-by-side.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions/advice on how to fix this.

Thank you in advance for your time and support!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First thing to do is to log out of wordpress, clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then try again. It could be a corrupted cache or cookie file causing the dashboard issues.

Hey, thanks so much for the advice :-)

I logged out, cleared the cache & browser history, then logged back in. I’m still experiencing the same problems. I had the Journalism template loaded, and I wanted to switch to Coraline. When I clicked on “Activate,” all I got was a top bar saying “My Account, My Blog, etc.” And the frame inside was blank. This is what thye previ9ew looks like, without me touching the CSS: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg30/kimsavestheday/Blog%20v2%20Admin/Error.jpg

Hopefully you have another suggestion for me?

    Thanks again!!

I’ll tag this thread so staff sees it. They are out of the office till the 19th, but they are monitoring the forums.

Have you by chance tried a different browser?

What browser and browser version are you using?

I am having this issue also, but I didn’t change my theme or the CSS it just started happening out of the blue. I have two accounts, http://myfanwe.wordpress.com and http:/megleigh.wordpress.com but the problem is only occurring on the myfanwe account not on the megleigh account. I have tried clearing my cache, reinstalling the latest version of java, restarting my computer and also tried loading the page on firefox, google chrome and ie8 and it’s the same on all of them, no matter what I do.

This issue also seems to be messing with the edit box for posts as I can only edit in html mode, which is why I thought it might have been a java problem. I’m running a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 home professional.

@myfanwe, go to users > personal settings and right near the top, make sure that “Disable the visual editor when writing” is NOT checked. If it is, uncheck it and click the “save changes” button. That should straighten out the editor issue. If it is unchecked, check it, save, navigate away from that page and then back to it, uncheck it, save again, and then try.

Thanks, Thanks for replying. I tried following those instructions but it hasn’t resolved the problem. I’ve done everything I can think of, and followed all of the instructions I’ve found about this on the forums, elsewhere but all to no avail. I am getting a long list of warnings in firefox’s error console and can send these if it will help the wordpress team when they get back.

I hope that this can be fixed as I use the blog a lot, and losing functionality is really disappointing.

That is about all I can offer really. I’ve tagged this thread for staff attention. They are out of the office till the 19th, but they are monitoring the forums. Hopefully they will respond soon.

@thesacredpath Thanks so much for your help anyway.

You’re welcome, and I’m sure staff will get it sorted out, hopefully shortly.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, thanks so much @thesacredpath for your assistance – hopefully the staff can help us both when they return! I’m eager to get things up and running and don’t want to lose that momentum by the 19th…

@kimsavestheday My toolbar seems to have come back this morning. Is your problem resolved?

  • kimsavestheday,

Are other sites on WordPress.com or even your own front page (without any CSS and outside the theme preview) working properly for you right now?

There’s another question here about the styles not appearing properly on your sites.

Can you please try to visit these URLs?

    http://s0.wp.com
    http://s1.wp.com
    http://s2.wp.com

You should be able to reach all three. Please test them and then report here what you are able to find.
