New to wordpress and having problems learning the ropes
-
I am new to wordpress and am not finding instructions for such things as how I pick the page to put a post on, how to add to archives, and other things but these would be a start.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is sort of a quick start article:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/get-started/
There is a useful tutorial to get you really going:
http://learn.wordpress.com/
And a lexicon so you can see definitions for the jargon:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/lexicon/ -
Also note that the Support articles are organized by topic and searchable:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/
And tags, as seen on the right of these forums will help you find information about specific topics.
For example:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/newbie
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/use-hyphens-between-multiple-words -
Here is information about posts:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
And pages:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
And the differences between them:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/You cannot post to a page, but you can use categories and a custom menu to make it easy for readers to select which topics they want to read:

You currently have two archives widgets in your sidebar: you need only one. Your posts automatically appear with the newest on top of your front page, and in reverse chronological order below. The posts are automatically archived by month and are accessible via the archive widget.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/There are other ways to display your archives, perhaps for an index page:

Okay, so I can’t post directly to a page. How do I get content on a page in the toolbar. Someone before obviously has done so but I can’t figure it out.
Thanks, 1Tess for your help. -
I see that I have two archives on the page, each holding the identical items. How do I get rid of one of them?
-
On the widgets page, you just remove one of the Archive widgets. Just drag it into the Inactive Widgets box.
How do I get content on a page in the toolbar.
Did you read about the difference between Posts and Pages? This workaround may help you http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/

I think I understand the difference between a post and a page. But it sounds like what you are saying is once a page is created no text can be added to. One of our pages on the menu is “see our recent statement.” If I want to add a new statement to that page is it possible or do I have to create a new page? It just doesn’t make any sense.
-
It sounds like you DO NOT understand the difference between a post and a page. Please review: http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
Pages are for information that will not be updated. Posts are for information that is being updated.

I am guessing you are taking over maintaining the site from someone else who did not train you about using WordPress. Is that correct?
Of course you can change the content on a page.
dashboard—>pages—>edit a page—>update.
Did your read the information I linked to about pages?Another key question is, what are the goals of your group? Do you want the blog to attract new readers?
-
Tess, thank you again for all your help.
Yes, I am taking over maintaining the site from someone who was not able to train me, thus my ignorance and confusion.
You mention that I can change the content of a page by going to the dashboard, to pages, to edit a page to update. The three options at pages on the dashboard on my dashboard are; all pages, Add New, Copy a Page. There is no option for edit a page.
I guess the problem is that whoever set up the site thought that pages could be places where we would place certain items, for example the page “see our recent statement” would be where we would put recent statements that are perhaps too old to be on the home page. But what I’m gathering is that this is not what pages are for and this cannot be done. We have another page called Letters where we would like to put copies of all the different letters the group writes to different people. Obviously, when a particular letter is first posted it is posted on the home page but we would like to be able to save them, archive them if you will, under a heading called letters to make them easier to find, distinct from other things we post. The same goes for the other pages created. I am gathering that it is not possible to move letters to the Letters page. Is that correct? -
Hover over the post or page title and an “edit” link appears. Click it. For editing see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/ -
If you make Posts, and categorize all the letters as Letters, then you can use the workaround I gave you above to collect all the letters on a category page http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/

Select “all pages” so you will see a list of all pages, published or drafts. Choose one and you’ll be able to edit it.

But editing pages is not the most efficient way to handle this:
We have another page called Letters where we would like to put copies of all the different letters the group writes to different people.
Here is one specific example about using a category called “Letters” automatically update in a tab on a custom menu:
Edit this post:
http://cascholars4academicfreedom.wordpress.com/
so you assign the category “Letters” to that post (and do the same on every other post that is a letter.
Then you can have the “Letters” tab on your custom menu with a link like this:
http://cascholars4academicfreedom.wordpress.com/category/Letters/
(That link won’t work right now because you don’t yet have any posts assigned to the category “Letters” but once you do that link will display all of the “Letters.”) -
I’m still not getting it.
I click edit on a posted letter (posted where all posts go) and see a place where I can add a category. I add the category “letters” but I don’t know how to assign this attribute to the letter, and, when I go to the main page letters does not appear as a category. How do I make the addition and how do I assign the category letters to a particular post.
