I thnk the closest you can get is with a theme that puts images on the index page like Hatch , TheStyle, or Visual.

Or you can set a static page as your front (possible on all themes), and insert thumbnails that link to other static pages or posts or post categories.

Good idea justpi – that would certainly give you the best flexibility, you could make it look much more like the linked site. The downside is it would be more work, you would have to edit it manually when you wanted to change the list of pages/posts.

thanks tandava108 and justpi for your valuable input :-)
The themes which tanadava108 showed are really nice and I guess that is what I needed.
One thing i would like to know that is it possible to have comments sections on static pages. This is just to keep the readers more involved and interactive.
    thanks again :-)

Yes, it is. In fact, it’s the default.

    Thanks raincoaster for your input.
I just installed the ‘visual’ theme and I am facing a little problem .
When I am configuring the home page as static page, it just allows me to put a single page. The grid like appearnce works only if I keep my home page as recent posts page. So I was wondering if its possible to have that grid like appeance as static page and each ‘box’ would link to a static page.thanks in advance for any help :-)

Then we cannot help you and you are in the wrong forum. That version of the software is not compatible with WordPress.com and you need to be at WordPress.ORG, as the support bot suggested days ago.
