New to wordpress. Have been asked to update an existing site. not sure how to start.

    A friend has a business with a wordpress site. He has asked if I can help maintain his site. I am new to wordpress. I don’t have a site and don’t know best way to get started. I can ask my friend for log-in credentials to his site and perhaps teach myself using his site or a copy of it? or do I need to teach myself wordpress from scratch before I can start working on an existing site? I no longer have a site to play with… can I work and practice with wordpress without one? Thanks!

    We’d be happy to help, but we require one vital piece of information. What is the URL of your website?

    Bare in mind that if your websites uses the self-hosted version of WordPress rather than WordPress.com, you should post in the self-hosted forums or alternatively contact your hosting prover. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Nobody should ever share confidential information, including passwords. It would be much wiser to have him invite you to the website.

    For WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

    For self hosted WordPress: https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/customizing-wordpress/managing-users-on-your-wordpress-site/adding-users-to-your-wordpress-site/

    thanks for this info. here is the url i was provided:

    and i am going to reach out to his IT person and share this with him.

    not sure best way to proceed… can i work on a copy or hidden section of the site in order to teach myself how to make the changes he wants? (copy and photo updates, etc.) or do you recommend going through available tutorials?
