new to wordpress, trying to delete "uncategorised"
-
Hi. I am new to wordpress and have placed a post under “Catagories” called “uncategorized”. I want to delete this posting but try as I may through the library option and elsewhere, I cannot delete it. Can anyone please shed any light on how I get rid of it please?
Thanks
Richard
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Every blog must have a default category. Just make sure every post you’ve got has at least one category and you can safely eliminate that http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

Thanks, I had trawled through the categories link, but wondered why I couldn’t delete the category called “uncategorised”. So, I understand it has to stay, but can I delete all of its content so when the “uncategorised” link it will be empty, or do I just leave it as is?

It doesn’t have to stay. But every single post you make has to have at least one category. Then you can create one as the Default under your dashboard Settings->Writing page. Then, after that, you can delete the Uncategorized category.
-
First you have to assign one published post to a category of your choice.
Then dashboard—>settings—>writing—>choose default category—>save changes.
Then you can bulk edit all of your posts to have that category.
dashboard—>all posts—>select all (click on the word “Title”—>under the “Bulk Actions” menu choose “edit”—>you’ll see a screen pop up where you can choose a category—>update
All your past posts will now have a category name of your choice; future posts will automatically be assigned to that category unless you add another one.
Delete the “uncategorized” category
posts—>categories—>delete “uncategorized”—>save changes -
Thanks all very much for all of your advice. I shall go away now and follow your guidance and hope I get it right!

OK, I’ve done it now and also found some “killertips” videos that go through it. Thanks again

Hi Richard,
That’s great! Where are the “killertips” videos?
Have you worked through this, a tutorial which helps folks get acclimated to this blogging platform:
http://learn.wordpress.com/One thing I’d note is that you can add other categories and tags to each to of your posts in addition to (or instead of) the default category.

Sorry, I meant “Killersites” not tips. http://www.killervideostore.com/video-courses/wordpress-themes.php
Thanks for the other advice and yes Wales is beautiful and we are extremely lucky. -
Nothing at that link is applicable to a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It’s all applicable only to WordPress.ORG installs. We cannot build our own themes. There is no FTP access and we cannot upload any third party themes. The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are these themes http://wordpress.com/themes/
Read this please http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ -
Also note what does apply to your free hosted WordPress.com blog can be found here not off site. On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The relevant support documentation for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

“The Genius guide to WordPress” had a free DVD which when loaded connected to the web and then showed “Killersites” videos on how to setup WordPress. I now know these are also available on the Killersites at a cost, I thought they were free, so the DVD obviously let me in. I had trouble getting what I needed in WordPress help I’m afraid.

Are you crystal clear on all the differences between free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and WordPress.ORG installs?

And when you need help come to these forums. WordPress.com is not WordPress.org. We volunteers are happy to help you with specific questions. Also use the tutorial both timethief and I linked to: http://learn.wordpress.com/
the support documents here (as timethief noted):
http://en.support.wordpress.com
and search the forums using tags.
For example, to search for information on categories in these forums:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/catagories
If there is more than one work in the tag use hypens-between-words -
