New to wordpress, using Espied, I have a couple of questions
-
Hello!
This website is meant to display a gallery of 250 portraits.
https://manjushriportraits.wordpress.com/
My homepage is made of a static portfolio– When I click on a thumbnail to switch to the individual view, I CAN’T go directly to the next picture. How to enable it?
– The first line of the portfolio displays 4 thumbnails, the second line 6 thumbnails, the third line dispays 6 thumbnails but in a different way than the second line. How can I fixe this?
– I want to attribute written info to each portrait (firs name + country). How can I get this info displaying when you pass the pointer over the thumnail? And how can I get this info displayed on (or below) the picture when the picture is displayed individually?
Big thanks
E

Hello E,
My homepage is made of a static portfolio
Your use of the word portfolio is different from the typical use of the term portfolio regarding WordPress.com sites, and particularly with respect to portfolio themes such as Espied. The front page of the Espied demo is a static page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned in the Page Attributes module of the page editor.
When I click on a thumbnail to switch to the individual view, I CAN’T go directly to the next picture. How to enable it?
That’s because you are displaying images inserted into the page content rather than displaying a gallery of images in one of the optional gallery layouts. See the Galleries and Slideshows support page for information on how to create and display a gallery in a page.
The first line of the portfolio displays 4 thumbnails, the second line 6 thumbnails, the third line dispays 6 thumbnails but in a different way than the second line. How can I fixe this?
Just create and display a gallery on the page, and remove the inserted images.
I want to attribute written info to each portrait (firs name + country). How can I get this info displaying when you pass the pointer over the thumnail?
Tooltips or infotips used to be automatic with gallery images on WordPress.com. That changed a few years ago. Now, I don’t know if it’s possible.
And how can I get this info displayed on (or below) the picture when the picture is displayed individually?
If by “individually” you mean in a gallery carousel, then the information can be included in the Caption field at Edit Gallery > Attachment Details. If you mean on an attachment page, text can be added below the image by including it in the Alt Text box at Edit Gallery > Attachment Details.

By the way, here is your portfolio: https://manjushriportraits.wordpress.com/portfolio/.

Thank you very much Doc!
I’ll read your email again and take it closely into consideration in later this week, as I’m currently focused on the text content.
But I completely get the points of your answer.
I knew it a was technical matter, and a culture / vocabulary I don’t have (ex.: the portfolio definition. I thought it was a collection / gallery of pictures).
Thanks again, you are doing a great job and I’ll comeback!

You’re welcome, E
(ex.: the portfolio definition. I thought it was a collection / gallery of pictures).
Yes, it can be that. And I shouldn’t have suggested that that meaning wasn’t valid in the forums. However, there is a more specific meaning of the term in WordPress parlance. See the Portfolios support page.

Thanks!
I made a big move forward. created a gallery, etc…
getting there!1. The gallery is featuring the 1st image in a BIGGER size. How can I opt out? I ant all the images same size.
2. the background of the images in the mosaic view is white. can I put it in another colour?
thanks!

E,
1. The gallery is featuring the 1st image in a BIGGER size. How can I opt out? I ant all the images same size.
I think that’s because you’re gallery is set to display the square tiles style, in two columns. The default for that style, according to my tests, is three columns, with two square images on the top of larger size than those in the rows of three squares.
2. the background of the images in the mosaic view is white. can I put it in another colour?
I think the gallery background in any style is white on this theme. To change that, if possible, would probably require CSS customization.

Thanks Doc!
1. Do you know what’s the best way to have 2 language versions of my website online?
I would like to have, on each site, a link to the other
I provide the translated texts. I’m not looking for a translation software or pluggin.2. Is there a way to set what image is associated to the wordpress link when it is forwarded / shared on facebook or other social sites?
thanks!

E,
You’re welcome!1. Do you know what’s the best way to have 2 language versions of my website online?
See “Option 3: Two Blogs” in the Set Up a Multilingual Blog support page.
2. Is there a way to set what image is associated to the wordpress link when it is forwarded / shared on facebook or other social sites?
I’m not sure what the criteria are for which image will be drawn to represent a post on various social sites. It may vary between social sites.
You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention if you would like to further discuss this issue, or other issues raised in this topic, with staff.

2. Is there a way to set what image is associated to the wordpress link when it is forwarded / shared on facebook or other social sites?
The answer is no.
We have no control over the images that Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

Regarding 2 languages and option 3 : I started to do it but it seems that I should entirely reproduce the second site?!
I thought there would be a function to automatically create a second site IDENTIC TO the first one. With the same media database, same header. Looks like it is not the case…
Why not option 1 or 2 tho?thanks
-
@ koocer,
Why not option 1 or 2 tho?
Options 1 and 2 may be preferable for you. Certainly you should have a look at all three options. I suggested option 3 because you specifically indicated that you wanted to have two separate sites, here:
1. Do you know what’s the best way to have 2 language versions of my website online?
I would like to have, on each site, a link to the other
I provide the translated texts. I’m not looking for a translation software or pluggin. -
:-)
Yes my first formulation (“2 language versions of my website”) was closer to what I felt.As it is the first time I do something else than facebook, putting content online wise, I come from far.
But I’m learning! And you’r part of it Doc, so THANKS!

For what it’s worth:
2. Is there a way to set what image is associated to the wordpress link when it is forwarded / shared on facebook or other social sites?
If you’ll set a featured image that is at least 300x300px and include that image somewhere in the post, that should work. If you’re doing that and still see the wrong image, send us a link to the post and to the item on social media. While we can’t fully control what others display, we can try. :) Cheers!

thanks for your answers.
I have a problem : all my website pages appears on the left of the browser’s page instead of being centered as it was before.
It happened today while I was trying to set up a bilingual menu, Option 2: One Blog, Two Posts
I did touch the widget section, not really understanding what I was doing…
-
Ah ok I fixed it. It was related to something like a widget menu in the side bar… removed it without really understanding what is was doing..

Hello!
As there is a couple of aspects of the design I’d like to change, I think I may upgrade for the paid version.
Can you please confirm that I will be able to :
– have my pages texts in clear font on dark background
– Have permanent dark background all the time around / behind the pages
– Change the size and the colour of the subtitle of my site (located under the site’s name)
– Reduce the space between the bottom of the header and the top of the page and the text in itBig thanks,
E
