New to WordPress.com, could use some tips.

    Hi Everyone,

I’m still relatively new to WordPress.com and I’m really enjoying this so far, but I have a few things that I can’t figure out yet. Most of my searching has pointed to plugins, which I don’t think I can use on wordpress.com. As I understand it, I would need to host my own site in order to do that. I might try to figure out how to do that eventually, but I want to get some content together and figure out the basics first. I do have a paid account on wordpress if that makes a difference in what I can do.

    So, here are some questions:

    1) Can I make my pictures pop out in a box instead of onto a new page? I figured out galleries and how to add the include=/exclude= modifiers, but I’ve seen people do some really neat pop-outs and I can’t figure this out.

    2) Can I make my registered URL point to a page rather than the blog section of the website? I think that I’d like to be able to post my books that I’m reading to the blog so that friends and family can comment on each book, rather than having the one long page that has comments at the bottom. Then I could make the “about” section into a normal page, but I do want that to be the first thing people see when they come to the site. Or is their a way to turn a page into and additional blog section that you can post too? I’m open on other ways to solve this so other layout suggestions would be appreciated too.

    3) I figured out how to remove the widgets column from my pages and leave it on the blog, but is there a way to make it so different pages have a different set of widgets on the sidebar? I’d like to have my Twitter feed on the about page and my goodreads widget on my books page, etc.

I’m having alot of fun with this. My page is pretty basic so far, but as I figure things out, I hope to make it more elegant and full-featured. Any help, advice, or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. jcmiller.net links to the page.

    Thanks,

    Josh
