New to WP domain transfer: how to not interrupt my domain’s email address?

  • Unknown's avatar

    1) I am in the process of transferring my domain, and I’m concerned about uninterrupted email using the several email addresses on my domain.

    2) Also my primary email address uses my domain name, as in ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ . When setting up the transfer here at WP, it says I can’t use in my email address a domain that I plan to transfer. But I do I want to keep my domain email address as my primary one, since it is already the one I use… Is it possible to use a temporary email address and then change it back to my @mindscapefx.com one?

Any reassurances, advice and information would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to sort these two questions out before I check out in my Cart.

    Thank you very much!
    David

  • Hi there,

When you transfer a domain to us we do not automatically update any DNS records on the domain, exactly so that it will not interrupt your email or any other services you have set up on your domain that depends on DNS.

Once the transfer to us is complete, you can add the necessary DNS records on our end, and if you only switch the domain’s name servers to point to us once you’ve done that there should be almost no down-time at all on your email.

Are you speaking of the domain admin contact email? You cannot use an address @yourdomain for that, no. That email is to send you important notices about your domain, and if it comes to it your only proof that you are the owner of the domain. If you use an email address on your domain as the contact email for the domain itself and the domain were to be suspended or expire, that would cause the email to stop working, and you’d have no way at all to receive emails from us regarding the domain.

You can use an email address @yourdomain for your WordPress.com username account (though it’s risky for the same reasons I mentioned above), but not for the admin contact email on the domain.
