New to WP, have existing site: how to set up w/out interruption?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have an existing site and domain name hosted through another company. I plan to switch to WordPress with a Business account and use my current domain after I get my site set up here. Can I set up my site here before I transfer the domain in order to avoid any kind of interruption? As far as I can tell, the first thing I need to do here is to choose a domain name for my site, which I already have.

    So I’m stuck right there.

I want to start building my WP site, and then assign my existing URL to it.

    Thanks,

    David

    Hey @davidwilsonmfx,

You don’t need to worry regarding connecting your existing domain with WordPress.com hosting. You can transfer your existing domain or even use domain mapping service provided by WordPress.com.

If you want to use your existing domain and don’t want to buy a new one merely click on Already own a domain? under domain search bar :), now you will be asked to transfer or map your domain, click on transfer and make the payment. Once you are done with your site setup, you can transfer your domain later on, you will be provided a subdomain which you can use to create a site before you transfer your domain :).
If you are confused, then click on this link to jump all steps https://wordpress.com/start/business/domains/use-your-domain

    Thanks !!!

Thank you, @arvindsinghu , that is very helpful! I was afraid I might have to follow through with the whole transfer immediately if I chose something.
