new unexplained subscribers
-
Hello,
Overnight I have acquired 37 new subscibers. I have not received any notifications from WP on these subscribers as I usually do. What is the deal??? Are these actual 37 new subscribers for real or it is just some weird new WP calculating system? Help!!!!
I’m very grateful for new readers, but freaked out by how it happened (if in fact it DID happen).
Thanks,
LCS

The subscription numbers completely ignored WordPress.com subscriptions (using the built-in reader on the WP.com front page) before last night.
We made a change to “correct” the numbers and to give you the information for those people who are subbed using WordPress.com. The result of this is that for many people, those numbers increased, because if someone clicks on Subscribe in the Admin Bar while viewing your site, the default subscription is through the WordPress.com reader.

I don’t think the problem with sudden invalid increase of subscribers has been corrected. This is what is happening to me—-everytime I send an email to someone from one of my posts & I check back on the subscription stats those emails automaticallly show as a subscriber. These people are not subscribing that quickly, like within a minute? That just isn’t possible. I believe their is a glitch somewhere that is showing emails as subscribers without the subscribers having signed on.

Thanks for the update.
This explains WHY I went from 523 email subscribers one day to 929 email subscribers the next.
I was a bit mindboggled, yet excited at the same time. :-)
Thanks again WP.com…once again, you answer questions/concerns in a timely manner.

I’m interested in fcaguild’s comment. Not sure if I totally agree with his/her comment.
I’m glad for this answer here and elsewhere when I asked same question.

Hello Maidiebike—Try sending a few emails from the Share emails at the end of your post page to people who aren’t subscribers at the moment, check back on your stats page, click on your subscribers & see if those very same email addesses you just sent out are showing up automaticallly as subscribers. This is what is happening to me. Their is no way people are signing up that quickly like within a minute. In addition I have checked with several people who have been added in this way & they tell me they have not subscribed. Please let me know what you discovered.

Hey, all – please see the latest on this here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/what-the-what-has-been-going-on-with-subscription-numbers-in-stats?replies=4
tl;dr version – we were counting and showing you some of the users who had initiated a subscription addition but had not confirmed their email address to the system, which should not have been done.
We did some more corrections on it this morning and the numbers you have now should be accurate for active (confirmed) subscribers.
I’m sorry for the mix-up. We wanted to give you the WordPress.com-only subscribers to provide you with more detail and messed up the counting along the way.
It’s important to note that *no* subscribers have been dropped as part of this process. The problems were all in the counting.
