New Update? Link button forces me to the top of the page.

  • Unknown's avatar

Starting today (Sept 12) while creating a post, when I click the link button to embed a link, it forces me to the top of the page – for EVERY link. It makes it very difficult to keep my place on a long post that has lots of embedded links. Some of my posts are over 9000 words. I am using the free wordpress.com site. Help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I’m not getting this kind of behavior from either the classic editor or the new one. Can you please let me know which editor you’re using (https://yellowpinetimes.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php or https://wordpress.com/posts/) and walk me through the process of adding the link so that I can better troubleshoot that issue?

Thank you. The link when I make a post is:
    https://wordpress.com/post/yellowpinetimes.wordpress.com
When I make a post containing lots of links, I like to embed a link in a word like “link”. I highlight the word, then press the symbol that looks like a chain link, a window comes up to paste in the link – and the page jumps to the top.

This is an example of the type of post I make

    Fire Update Sept 12, 2018

I did not embed many links as it got irritating having the page jump to the top each time.
    Thank you

    Update 9-14
In addition to the problem with embedding a link, now when I click the button “Add Media” (so I can upload and insert a photo) it bounces me to the top of the page.
This is getting rather frustrating, as I add photos and links to long posts and have to scroll back down to the section I am working on.

PS – I compose my posts in Note Pad (plain text) then copy that into the editor (HTML view) switch to Visual view, then do the links and images, etc.

    Thank you

    Hello!

I’ve actually started experiencing the same issue. I’ve tested it on both self-hosted and WordPress.com sites. When adding a photo from the WordPress.com editor it bounces back to the top after adding the file.

This seems to only happen when I’m using the WordPress.com editor, meaning the URL is something like https://wordpress.com/post/example.com/1.

If I edit the same post from the Admin area https://example.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=1&action=edit, then I do not get the same issue.

I was using this wpcom editor since I can easily pull photos from Google Photos or URL, rather than download and upload.

Hope this helps provide some insight on the issue!

    -Kevin

Hi @yellowpinetimes and @kevinpudlo, can you please provide the following so we can see if we can reproduce this.

    1. Browser and browser version you are experiencing this in

    2. Computer OS and version

    3. Have you tried in a different browser to see if it is related to just a certain browser?

Many thanks in advance for helping us to reproduce and track this issue down.

    Hello @thesacredpath,

Here’s the information I have, all computers and browsers had the same result. If I add a picture, either from Media Library, or the Media from Google option, I get sent to the top of the article after insert.

Computer 1: macOS 10.13.4 – Tried on a Jetpack connected WP
    Browser 1: Firefox 61.0.2
    Browser 2: Safari 11.1
    Browser 3: Chrome 68.0.3440.106

Computer 2: Windows OS Build 17134.164 – Tried on a WordPress.com website and a Jetpack connected WP
    Browser 1: Edge 42.17134.1.0
    Browser 2: Chrome 68.0.3440.106

    Hope this all helps!

I also just tested out creating a brand new post from the editor and it still went to the top when adding a new image.

  • The new editor on WordPress.com is JavaScript based therefore I need you to disable any ad-blocking or security extensions you may have installed. It is known that those kinds of extensions interfere with JavaScript applications.

I have windows 10 and using a Chrome Browser. I have an ad blocker, but this has never been an issue until recently. I am not using any new editor, just the same as I have for the last few years.

Adding photos or embedding links causes the page to jump to the top each time I click either the “add media” or “insert link” buttons.

This issue occurs whether I’m making a new post or editing an old post.

  • Unknown's avatar

I disabled the ad blocker for WP.com then tried to edit an old post and get the same “jumping to the top of the page” issue.

I’ve had the same issues using Calypso (using Win 10 and Chrome 68 or Edge 42.17134.1.0 ) for a while now. Just clicking the link button (even before you even get to add a link) and adding images always sends you back to the top of the post. Likewise clicking the “special characters” button. I’ve just updated Chrome to version 69.0.3497.92 (Official Build) (64-bit) with no extensions or ad blockers but it hasn’t made any difference.

I don’t have adblockers installed either, some.of them had the Pinterest extension, some did not.

  • Is this only occurring in the Chrome browser? What happens if you try FireFox?

  • Unknown's avatar

staff-zinnia I get the same results using Firefox 62 Chrome 69 or Edge 42.

  • Unknown's avatar

staff-zinnia, I’ve tried it on Firefox, Chrome, and Safari on Mac; Edge and Chrome on Windows; and have had the same issue on all browsers.

themagicrobot also said he’s had the same issue using Chrome and Edge on his computer.

I see I am not the only one having this problem. I disabled my ad blocker and still have the problem. It makes it very time consuming to add photos and links to a long post.

  • Hi all,

Thanks for all the info. It looks like this is a recurrence of an old bug that we fixed last year. It’s already been reported to our developers, so hopefully we’ll be able to find the cause and fix whatever is causing it again.

We’ll update you here once we know more.

  • Unknown's avatar

Good to know that this problem may be fixed soon. Still occurring as of 9-23-2018.

  • Unknown's avatar

Does anyone know if there’s been any progress with this? Do we have to do anything with our accounts to fix the problem?

It’s still an issue as of September 27th.

    Thank you!
