New URL

I’ve been writing a blog on the wordpress site for few years. Now I’d like to make a new address for this blog without having to migrate all data and install wordpress again. How do I correctly configure WP to use the new URL and keep my site in the search results but under the new URL? Also, I don’t want the old address to be available for use again, and visitors should not be redirected to my new site address. I tried a few times as per the instructions on WP site but am running into a lot of problems.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

How do I correctly configure WP to use the new URL and keep my site in the search results but under the new URL?

Assuming you’re talking about your free site address, here’s what to do:

    1) Rename the site using these steps

    2) Ask staff to restore the old name

    3) Purchase a “redirect upgrade” ($13/year)

    4) Configure it to point from the old name to the new

The old address will not be available again. You’ll own it.

Let us know if that helps!

Oh, and if you’re changing the address for your own .org installation elsewhere (vs a free site using our services), you’ll need different steps. I’d recommend reading this & working with your host on the redirects.
