New user – blogs I follow, and how to follow mine?

  • Unknown's avatar

Just set up blog with Oxygen theme.
    1. Can’t figure out how to let people follow, and
    2. how to list blogs i follow
    3. subtitles color is too light to see

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • 1. Can’t figure out how to let people follow, and

They can follow you via the Reader or via the admin bar without you needing to do anything. You can also add a follow blog widget which users can use to subscribe for email notifications: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

See here for more information on following: https://en.support.wordpress.com/following/

    2. how to list blogs i follow

That would be the Blogs I Follow widget. Be aware it only shows the blogs you followed most recently and has a limit on how many blogs it can show: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/blogs-i-follow-widget/

    3. subtitles color is too light to see

I’m afraid the only way to adjust that is by editing the theme’s CSS, for which you’ll need the premium upgrade. My suggestion is rather change your background colour to one that has a better contrast with the subtitle colour.

Thank you for answering. I'm still frustrated. I added the three blogs I want to appear, but they don’t appear. When I click on the links you provided, they show me windows that don’t remotely resemble what I see when I'm editing my blog site. I just don’t have the same choices. I upgraded to premium so I could change the colors, but for some reason I don’t see a preview. The only way I can see the effect of my changes is to go to my site in Explorer (I make my changes in Google Chrome). Can you give me some more ideas, please?

  • I added the three blogs I want to appear, but they don’t appear.

You can’t add blogs to that widget. The moment you click “Follow” on another blog, that blog’s blavatar or a link to that blog (depending on how you configured the widget) automatically appears inside that widget. However, it doesn’t happen immediately, and you might only see the change on your own site after clearing your browser cache and cookies.

I can see that widget just fine in your sidebar, right underneath the About Me widget. You have it set up to display the blogs as a list and it is currently showing five blogs you’re following, though for some reason it’s showing the Teach and Reflect blog twice. I’m guessing you unfollowed and the refollowed that site, causing it to appear twice inside the widget.

When I click on the links you provided, they show me windows that don’t remotely resemble what I see when I’m editing my blog site. I just don’t have the same choices.

There are two dashboards. If you see a blue toolbar at the top, you are on the My Sites dashboard which you reach by clicking the My Sites button. If you see a black toolbar at the top, you’re on the WP-Admin dashboard. You can reach that via the WP-Admin link on the My Sites page, or via this direct link which you can bookmark in your browser: http://reflectionpools.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ Some options are only available on the WP-Admin dashboard.

I upgraded to premium so I could change the colors, but for some reason I don’t see a preview.

I don’t think you upgraded to premium. It rather looks like you went and bought a premium theme, which is something completely different. Yesterday you had the Oxygen theme. Today you have Obsidian which is a premium theme.

Buying a premium theme does not give you the ability to edit the CSS. That is a completely different upgrade, namely the Premium Upgrade Bundle.

If you want to keep working with Obsidian, you can look at the theme support doc for instructions how to customize it, or you can post in the Obsidian theme forum for more help, as we can’t help you with a premium theme in the regular forum: http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/obsidian

If you don’t want a premium theme, but the premium upgrade, you can cancel your theme and get a refund from the Store section of the dashboard and buy the $99 a year Premium Upgrade Bundle instead. That will allow you to edit the colour scheme via CSS.

For help with CSS you need to post in the CSS forum, here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform

See here for more info on editing the CSS:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

But before you do anything else, I suggest you first work your way through the tutorials so you know how this platform works: http://learn.wordpress.com/ And always make sure you read the relevant support documents BEFORE you make any purchase or do anything drastic like changing a theme or deleting your site. Some mistakes, like buying the wrong upgrade, can be reversed, but others, like deleting your site, are permanent and can never be undone.
