New user here, using twenty eleven. Should I be using a child theme?
-
Hello and thankyou for reading. As the title says I am very new to wordpress and have spent the past 2 weeks putting together my site. I am pleased with the results so far but I have a LOT to learn. On several occasions I have read that it’s wise to use a child theme as a wordpress update can cause havoc to twenty eleven? Can anyone give me more info on this? I would hate to lose all the hard work I have put in so far and want to do whatever I can to make sure that I don’t. Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All updates here at WordPress.com are done by Staff. The only versions of the themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here in your dashboard > Appearance > Themes and showcased here > http://wordpress.com/themes/
You cannot build your own theme here. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install any plugins or upload any third party themes or software. Those are for WordPress.ORG installs which run on different software.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/There is no upgrade that you can purchase from WordPress.com that provides FTP access, the ability to install plugins, third party themes and software into free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

Thanks for your reply. So I understand that there’s nothing I can do whilst using wordpress.com.
Should I be worried at all that my work may be affected in future?
Sorry if I am missing something here? -
There’s nothing that needs to be done. Twenty Eleven has been around for two years and the issue you point to is not one I have seen arising here at all. If it did arise then Themes Staff would fix the template. Note that this is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template.

That is only relevant for WordPress.ORG installs – you can’t do child themes at WordPress.COM – you don’t even have the CSS upgrade – you are using a stock theme – Don’t worry about your blog – nothing will get lost
