New User Registration?

I want to require that my readers register before they read my blog. That way, I can send out regular emails in order to keep a fairly good following of readers. However, I can’t seem to find any plugins or blogs that know where I can find a plugin that will add a “REGISTER HERE” button to my homepage.
Maybe it would be wiser just to have a Name/Password/Email form on the homepage and then something to prove humanity. But I don’t know how to do that either. I’ve been hearing a lot about “Customize Your Community,” but that seems to be focused more after the fact than before.
How do I get started?
And if this has already been asked that anybody knows of, can you point me to the older post please?

This is the support forum for blogs hosted on wordpress.COM. From your question it appears to me that you are not asking about a wordpress.COM blog, but a self-hosted worpdress.ORG installation.
