new user seeks help w/themes & starting WP site

    hello wp community!

    i am new to wordpress and having trouble getting started with my current project.

    i am trying to choose a theme and don’t know what all to consider and look for in a good theme.

    i have a beginning level of experience with HTML and CSS and need to build a 12-18 page website that will contain at least one blog.

    i have explored coding my own home page via chris coyier @ lynda.com, beginning with a blank theme but feel my JS/jquery and PHP skills are too weak to attempt this direction. (as fun as i think it would be and as much as i REALLY want to try it!)

    on the other hand, i find most of the standard templates lacking in my basic needs such as a main featured content slider area and overall responsive design.

    i have also explored other custom themes outside wordpress that look good and that i assume i can customize further.

    does anyone have advice on how to choose a good theme and the criteria i should be using to make my decision?

    please help me get out of the gate and get running! thanks so much!
