New Visual Editor Concerns

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. Thanks for the text pasting improvements. Very nice. Now I won’t have to paste to Notepad first.

    2. The gallery previewer is nice, though not a preview, really. A thumbnail summary, regardless of chosen gallery type. But still a useful feature. One glitch: HTML used in captions does not translate in the preview.

    3. I mourn the loss (please upload flowers) of these three options in the image editor:

    a. Open link in new window checkbox (even though it was an awkward two-step procedure to do it; two clicks beats HTML typing). Not only is it no longer available for new posts, but I can’t disable it for images in old posts without editing the HTML. This applies to opening PDFs from images, too. (I always right-click on links and images when I browse, but I invented the Internet when Al Gore was still just a stiff-necked senator. You might be surprised how many people over 55 don’t know how to drive a mouse.)

    b. Border: typing 1 or 2 in a box beats the heck out of accomplishing the same thing via html editing, and it is a valuable option.

    c. Image spacing: ditto.

    4. Dragging corners to resize has been there a long time; not new. Or did I miss something about the new version of it?

    5. See below from comments at http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/editor-playlists-improvements/. What is this about? I still have the ability to click the “A” box and select colors for text. I have the plain free service, not custom design upgrade. Am I missing something?

“• Ben Huberman Mar 26th at 5:33 am
“This feature is no longer offered following this update.”

    6. Having a visual editor is a lot less fun when you have to switch to HTML editing for nearly every post, either for the image link new window opening option (which I hope is still there for making text links!) or for adding borders to images. Please fix it. Thank you.

Conditionally loving as always, The Balsamean.

    Re point 5 above —
“The ability to click for more text colors seems to have vanished. Am I missing something or is this no longer a feature?

How can I change text color to my specific hex number? Can you tell me how to do that in Text since it’s no longer in visual?

Or advise me how I can have control of text color — is there some new design upgrade you want me to buy?

    Thanks // Nancy

I used to be able to add pictures to a gallery at a later stage. That feature appears to have vanished.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I think most of the updates are great, and being a free WordPress user, I have little to complain about. But, I’m really not happy that I can no longer use hex codes for specific colors; it makes it almost impossible to match updates/new pages with the colors I’m using on existing pages. Was there a critical reason this ability was taken away?

Hi Nancy. Thanks for your reply.

Ah! … There’s no “More Colors” option on the palette button in the Visual Editor. So that’s what they tossed out. I didn’t notice that. Hmmm. Not nice at all.

Oh, well. I’ll just have to pick through a lot of old posts in the Text editor and find the hex #’s for the colors I liked in the past, then create a private post containing a “cheat sheet” displaying the colors and their #’s. Beginning HTML deja-vu.

To answer your question, if I understand you correctly …

One way would be to begin by using one of the limited available colors for the text you want to change. That will generate the HTML you’ll need, saving you that bit of typing. Then switch to the Text editor, search (Ctrl-F) for the text you want, see the HTML color code on it, and change that hex # to the one you want … if you know its #. If not, use the Background color setting tool to find a color hex # that you like. Grow a library garden of them for future use.

After doing this half a dozen times, it will be no worse than going back to standard shift and the light dimmer switch on the floor (where it belongs). While you’re at it, pick up on using the font-family HTML code, too. Very handy. Eventually we can just throw away the Visual Editor. Even get dial-up modems.

Use my Contact page if you want more explanation … and hopefully somebody can tell us both a better way … short of adding another $30 per year per blog to my web hobby. (Today I may sign up for the free 2-week trial of Custom Design … which may be why we’re facing these issues now, if you know what I mean. Maybe I’ll be really happy to pay the $30 when I see what it does for me, if anything.)

Chances are I’m blinded by arrogance as well as poverty and need enlightenment. So, in the famous words of that rubber-faced character, “Somebody stop me!”

    Hi LandscapeArtBlog!

In Visual Editor, click on the desired gallery’s editing “pencil.” In the Edit Gallery view, click “Add to Gallery” in the left column. Click the image(s) you want, then click the Add to Gallery button in the lower right corner. Is that what you wanted?

    Best wishes,
    The Balsamean

Thanks, Balsamean. Yes, you gave me the tip I need — I know the hex code for the main color accent I use. So that sounds easy. (BTW, I drive a stick shift car and don’t want to give up shifting.)

I’ll wait and see what other changes happened in the update before I decide to shell out $30 for the Custom Design upgrade. (To use my own analogy, I think this is like airlines charging for checked bags and pillows when they don’t want to raise fares.)

Hi Nancy. I drive a stick, too. Intentionally. Maybe I’m a control freak.

Fares … maybe WordPress is “up against it” somehow from the competition. I do love the product, the service, and the support, and I’d never suggest anybody try any other blogging service. Just sometimes some things don’t make sense. But then, that’s everywhere. Always has been. When I’m King of the World, a lot of things are going to change.

Thanks again, balsamean. Your tip for fixing the text color works like a charm. As you suggested, I just selected one of the basic palette colors, then went into the html and changed the hex number. Perfect.

Hi Nancy. Geez it sure feels nice to be useful once in a while!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, Balsamean! I was able to find the hex code for the color I wanted to use. Life is good again :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    A double pleasure, Carole!

But I’m still sorry we have to do it that way. The writing on the wall says that More Colors is not coming back.

    Jackie,
Will you continue posting to https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/the-paste-as-word-button-has-been-removed-from-the-visual-editor as these issues continue being addressed, to whatever extent that may be? In other words, can I use that as a central point to get the latest news on the matter until it is wrapped up?

In any case, I’m following that thread. I see your new statement re: More Colors.

  • Unknown's avatar

I will post updates to that thread. For specific conversation/feedback on a couple of issues, there are individual forums threads linked in those posts that are our “canonical” threads that would be good to follow, as that’s where we will troubleshoot these issues.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Jackie,
Yes, I had read those. So far, no good news regarding my concerns, about all of which many others have issues, too, among other problems, as you’ve seen in the Image Resize issues post that you suggested. The only fun I see in any of it so far is the chance to help Carole and Nancy. Otherwise the new Visual Editor seems to have done more harm than good. For me it will require much more effort to accomplish what had been extremely simple tasks for me. That’s never a good idea. I can only imagine the effect on prolific bloggers posting every day.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry our changes are frustrating for you. The good news is that our developers are listening to the feedback we’re getting, and if you can post your concerns in the following thread, we can better keep track of things:

  • Unknown's avatar

if you can post your concerns in the following thread, we can better keep track of things:

Hi Jackie. Just to make sure I understand clearly: I should post a copy of my original post in this thread to the Image Resize thread?

  • Unknown's avatar

… well, not an exact copy. A revised one.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, I’ve been in too many threads today. :)

If the issue involves the new image editor (borders, resizing, etc.), post here:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/image-resize-1?replies=15

If the issue involves Paste from Word, post here:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/posting-of-word-files-with-tables?replies=6

If the issue involves the removal of the “More colors” option, there’s no need to post about that, as I have posted here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/the-paste-as-word-button-has-been-removed-from-the-visual-editor?replies=5

For me, it’s all the above and a few other things I’ve now learned from other members’ reports.

But never mind. The forum is bursting with people posting about the same issues I have, and more. There are so many having the same troubles, I suppose the developers have gotten the message.

Rather than add one more thread on the same topics for you to monitor, this one probably should be closed now. I’m following all the other related threads, and WordPress News.

I’ll conclude by repeating that those features that WordPress has plainly stated have been removed intentionally, with no suggestion they may be returned, now definitely adds a lot of tedious work to nearly all of my future posts and some edits of old ones (e.g.: what I described above for Carole and Nancy to get color options, and the image border issue now closed).

This does not include the other extra editing steps I’ll have when WordPress decides not to do anything about some of the other removed features on which they have not declared a final position, such as the image link target window thing, and image spacing.

In any case, the product has been intentionally downgraded, diminished in important ways … important because they cause millions of people a lot more steps than what they did before with a few of clicks. That’s not an “improvement.”

This downgrade leaves me wondering if I’ll have to purchase an upgrade to get that functionality back, or just live with a product inferior to its former self. I don’t expect you to reply to that.

Thanks for your time. Close this thread if you wish.
