  i have old working website at my domain name. I want to build a new website, test it and when ready, publish it in lieu of an old one at the. If I enter the domain name now, would it effect the working website?

  A domain is an address that helps others find your site. If you map your domain to the new site, that address will stop leading to the old one. It won’t affect its content but your visitors will see the new site instead.

  That being said, if you want to work on your new site first, choose the free .wordpress.com subdomain and only map/transfer your custom domain when you’re ready.
