New website
-
Hi WordPress,
I have a very complicated situation. I own webspace on name secure.com and that is where my domain name is also registered. Because they do not provide an SSL certificate, I had to purchase it through one of their other companies, network solutions, and that took them about a week to put together and I am paid thru next year.
I would like to try to design a new website because my old one is obsolete and I need to design something that will easily show up on large computers and smart phones. But I do not want to transfer or point the domain yet until I build a website on WordPress. How do I do this without pointing my domain name towards the word press website I want to build. Can I build the website on word press without first pointing my domain name? What happens if I already have an SSL certificate, and you also provide one as I was thinking about the $8 a month plan? Is there a conflict?

Hi Jeffrey!
I’ll be happy to help you with this!
Can I build the website on word press without first pointing my domain name?
Absolutely! When you create a new WordPress.com site, we assign a WordPress.com address to it. That allows you to create the site without necessarily pointing or transferring your domain to us. You will be able to view your site and work as needed with the WordPress.com address.
What happens if I already have an SSL certificate, and you also provide one as I was thinking about the $8 a month plan? Is there a conflict?
We provide free SSL to all domains hosted on WordPress.com. That includes domains that are registered with us or pointed to WordPress.com. I think you’re referring to the WordPress.com Premium plan, which costs $96 per year. All WordPress.com plans will let you use your own domain and include free SSL certificates.
You can upgrade using the button below.
It’s worth noting that you won’t be able to use the custom SSL certificate that you bought elsewhere. So you must use the free SSL certificate we provide at WordPress.com.
Feel free to tell us more about the site you’d like to build. Once we know more about your site goals, we’ll be happy to share more specific suggestions/guides.
