Hi,
I need some help. I’d like to create a website for a friend using wordpress.com (not .org). I’m looking at either free/personal plan. I have never done this before, so I have a few questions:
Free plan
1) With the Free plan, can I map a domain purchased and hosted elsewhere? Is there a cost involved in this? I understand that you don’t support the domain extension .co.uk which is my preference.
2) For a Free or Personal Plan, do I need to pay for web hosting via one of your recommended sites such as siteground? Based on what I’ve learned, I think shared web hosting is the best solution. I’m unsure whether I need this for the website though. Or do I only need it with certain plans?
3) With the Personal plan, again, can I map to a domain registered elsewhere? If so, are there costs involved?
4) Where would you recommend I purchase a domain with the extension .co.uk for this website? Would they host it too? Is this recommended?Thank you in advance!

Hello!
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different things: https://wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
A WordPress.com personal plan starts at $2.99 / month paid annually. That includes 1 year of hosting, and a free domain, or a free domain mapping (what you are looking to do) if your domain is purchased elsewhere.
You can set up a free site here, and upgrade to a Personal plan later and point your new .co.uk domain to it when you’re ready.. no rush.
Personally I would recommend Namecheap.com for domain registration.. A .co.uk domain is about $10 Canadian or 0.29c USD or EURO (Sorry, just kidding, cheap shot at our Canadian dollar :)

How much is web hosting after the first year with the domain that was mapped in the first year? Does the cost continue as with the first year at $2.99 / month paid annually?

The price will be the same the following year ($2.99 per month, paid yearly). The domain is included with the plan, so there is no additional charge for that after the first year.
