New website
-
Hi,
I need some help. I’d like to create a website for a friend using wordpress.com (not .org). I’m looking at either free/personal plan. I have never done this before, so I have a few questions:
Free plan
1) With the Free plan, can I map a domain purchased and hosted elsewhere? Is there a cost involved in this? I understand that you don’t support the domain extension .co.uk which is my preference.
2) For a Free or Personal Plan, do I need to pay for web hosting via one of your recommended sites such as siteground? Based on what I’ve learned, I think shared web hosting is the best solution. I’m unsure whether I need this for the website though. Or do I only need it with certain plans?
3) With the Personal plan, again, can I map to a domain registered elsewhere? If so, are there costs involved?
4) Where would you recommend I purchase a domain with the extension .co.uk for this website? Would they host it too? Is this recommended?Thank you in advance!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
If the domain extension you want to use is not available for registration on WordPress.com, you can register elsewhere and add it to your WordPress.com blog using Domain Mapping.

Hello,
1) With the Free plan, can I map a domain purchased and hosted elsewhere? Is there a cost involved in this? I understand that you don’t support the domain extension .co.uk which is my preference.
The free plan only allows you to use a WordPress.com Subdomain, e.g. http://loubcblog.wordpress.com/. It’s not possible to map an external domain to your free plan on WordPress.com.
2) For a Free or Personal Plan, do I need to pay for web hosting via one of your recommended sites such as siteground? Based on what I’ve learned, I think shared web hosting is the best solution. I’m unsure whether I need this for the website though. Or do I only need it with certain plans?
WordPress.com is a hosted solution, thus your site will run on the WordPress.com web servers and you don’t have to worry about hosting. This counts for all plans, free and paid.
3) With the Personal plan, again, can I map to a domain registered elsewhere? If so, are there costs involved?
All paid plans, thus also the Personal Plan, include one domain credit that can be used either to register a domain with WordPress.com or to map your external domain to your WordPress.com site. The monthly costs for the Personal Plan are $2.99.
4) Where would you recommend I purchase a domain with the extension .co.uk for this website? Would they host it too? Is this recommended?
In order not to prefer one hosting company over another I cannot give you a recommendation on where to register the .co.uk domain.
As mentioned above, with paid plans you can register a domain with WordPress.com. On https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#available-domains you can find a list of all domain extensions that can be registered with WordPress.com at the moment. As WordPress.com does not provide the domain extension .co.uk currently, you’ll have to registered it with another domain provider. But you would only register the domain name and not the hosting. Your site would still be hosted on WordPress.com.
Let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help!
Best,

Hi loubcblog,
Just to follow up, you can learn more about domain mapping here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
You’ll also need to upgrade to the Personal, Premium or Business plan in order to use domain mapping.

Hi there,
If the domain extension you want to use is not available for registration on WordPress.com, you can register elsewhere and add it to your WordPress.com blog using Domain Mapping.
here’s the link for Mapping domain registered elsewhere
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/If you want to create a website using WordPress.com then you do not need any hosting it comes with free plan or Upgraded plans such as Personal, Premium and Business
(But for custom domain you need to have upgraded plan)
https://wordpress.com/pricing/Steps:
Login to your WordPress.com account then on the left-hand side select on top select the option “My Sites”
then click on “Switch site” > click on “Add New Site Option”
click on the button Create a new shiny WordPress.com site > “Start Now”
select whichever option do you want like: blog, website or portfolio and select a theme or skip it
Important: Find option which says this
A domain name is what people type into their browser to visit your site.
Already own a domain? click on that link
then type your domain name which is ending with .co.uk and click Add
(Domain mapping is free for your site if you go with Personal, Premium or Business Plan)I would recommend you to do research on Google which domain registrars provide you to register with the .co.uk
Let me know if this helps.
