New website for existing business
-
I’d like to begin setting up a new website, but do not want to transfer or map my domain yet. Can this step be skipped until I am ready to publish the new site?

Hi @jmoodybird,
You can create an account on WordPress.com and a new website. You can then import content from the old website and set this new website as “Private“.
Once you are ready with your new website, you can transfer or map a domain for which you need to purchase a plan.
Thanks

It looks as though I have to either choose to Transfer or Map in order to get to the next step.
-
- You first create an account on WordPress.com and new site. Your site address could be <sitename>.WordPress.com. This is your new website.
- Import content from old website to new website.
- Set new website as “Private” through settings option of admin dashboard.See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
- Select a theme and customize new Website.
- Once you are ready with your new website, transfer/map your existing domain. For that you need a plan. Check plan details here. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Click on My Sites -> Domains -> Add -> Map it!
The detailed steps are on this page:

Here are some tips on getting that free site set up:
