New website needed

  • Unknown's avatar

I need to create a new website as MrSite is closing. I can’t contact my hosting service (TSOHOST) for advice as they are always engaged! So was thinking of using WordPress.
I don’t know a lot about websites etc and fell at the first hurdle…
‘Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar.’
    What does that actually mean?

Hi there, there are two versions of WordPress, the one version of WordPress is here at WordPress.com and the other one is the self hosted open source version also known as WordPress.org.

‘Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar.’
    What does that actually mean?

Your website files need to be hosted somewhere to be found by your visitors online.
With a Business WordPress.com plan, you can have your own domain point visitors to your site on WordPress.com by mapping your domain or you can transfer your domain to WordPress.com. You can follow this link to see the pricing for upgrading your account
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you want to use the open source version of WordPress your hosting provider may offer services to install the WordPress open source version. You can read more about the differences here. https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

I hope this info will flatten some hurdles.😎

    Hmmm…

When I try to add my website, the address is changed from ***.co.uk to ***.wordpress.com which is not what I want!

Maybe this is not the site for me.

I just want to create a new website using the existing name – is that so difficult?

Hi there, I understand your frustration.
Just keep in mind, there is a lot of different ways you can go from here.

When I try to add my website, the address is changed from ***.co.uk to ***.wordpress.com which is not what I want!

***.wordpress.com will only be the case on a free plan. If you choose to upgrade your account you would be able to have the same domain name you always used ***.co.uk either through mapping or a domain transfer.
Here is the pricing just in case you did not check it out. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

With Mr.Site closing soon you might need to transfer your domain or ask TSOHOST to map your domain to the WorpPress.com nameservers. You can read more here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping-vs-domain-transfer/
You would need a paid plan to do this.

Do you still have access to your site files?
Would you be able to do a backup of your site?

You can also import your old site content.
If your site was built with WordPress open source software you can read more here on how to migrate to WorPress.com https://wordpress.com/support/coming-from-self-hosted/

I just want to create a new website using the existing name – is that so difficult?

As I said this is possible with “Mapping” or “Transfer”

    Hi Silvascoop
I’m in the same boat! I found WordPress far too complicated, Wix and Squarespace provide website builders which is the same as Mr Site was.
I’m going to go for Wix, and we need to move our ‘domains’ too. This can take a while, so we need to get on with it.
Such a shame Mr Site are closing, I thought they were brilliant.

    Hi,
I managed to speak to TSOHOST and they were quite helpful. I am awaiting a rep to contact me with a view to transferring the website from MrSite. As my knowledge of modern websites is quite poor, I look forward to their help, however, I’m sure it will come at a cost. If the cost is prohibitive, I may well try the names you mention.
Yes, MrSite was a godsend to small business’s.
