New website, old domain name

I want to create a new website with WordPress, but I would like my current website to be active while I work on the new one, which could take some time. How do I manage that?

You can have multiple websites. You can simply login to your account, if you are not already logged in and then visit https://wordpress.com/start to create additional sites.
However, please note that, upgrades and purchases are individual to each site and not to the complete account.
