New website without going live

    Hi there, I currently have a website that is live but isn’t connected to wordpress as somebody previously created this website for me. I have bought a new theme & would like to start creating my new website without it going live & people viewing it while I’m customising it. Is there a way I can do this?

    I also tried to put my owned domain in on here but it’s telling me to buy a plan. My daughter has a website & she says she doesn’t pay for a plan. Do I need to transfer the website directly on Godaddy instead in order to do this for free?

    Is this a WordPress.org site?

    For help with a site using the open source WordPress software, head over to https://wordpress.org/support/ where you’ll find documentation and users who have more experience with the software you are using.

    If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums you can register one on the top of that page. If you need help with a specific theme or plugin, the author’s support forum would be the best place to start.

    WordPress.com (this site) and WordPress.org are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. More information about the differences can be found here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

    That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain as you build the site and determine whether or not this is the platform you want to use. The site starts off private until you are ready to launch it. You can also set your site to coming soon as you work on it:

    https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/#privacy-options

    Once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    or map an existing domain:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

    You can absolutely use your custom domain with your WordPress.com site with or without a paid plan. You don’t need to buy a paid plan to have a custom domain here. You only need to upgrade to a paid plan if you need the features of that plan.

    One of the features of all of our paid plans is to allow users to set their custom domain as primary. If your custom domain is not primary, people will still end up at your site if they type your custom domain into the address bar.
