New widgets?
-
Hi! I am new here so I’m sure this question has been asked before but I could not find it so here go’s. Does WP.com ever add new widgets? Doing some research on the web, there are many constantly recommended widgets or add-ons from site to site but WP.com does not have them. Is this for a band-width reason? I know that I can not upload new ones, I’m sure that they have their reasons for this. I’m finding it useless to do research at WP.org because WP.com seems to be in its own world over here but mind you I am not criticizing, I’m just trying to figure it all out before I put in too much time and realize that something important to my site will force me to leave and start over. Great place they have here, just not sure why they are so closed off from the WP.org world, bugs maybe?

This is the main page for Widgets and Sidebars in the support documentation > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/ We can also use any third party widgets provided they are not JavaScript, forms, or iframes which are not allowed for security reasons. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
WordPress.org installs are for self hosting. They are free standing so if you install a widget with bad script or malicious code then only your own site goes down. There is no security risk to other blogs.
WordPress.com is a multiuser blogging platform where we share a common architecture underlying our blogs. If we were allowed to install JavaScript widgets, iframes and forms and there was a single bad script it could bring down many blogs.
We can provide a gigyacode workaround for some Flash widgets. If you have a particular widget in mind please post a link to it or better still post the code in between backtick ( ` ) characters and we shall examine it for your and provide a wrorkaround where possible.

Sorry! I didn’t realize that all of the blogs were so interconnected, that must be what they meant by “multi-site version of the WordPress”. I can see your point, and I already read all of the hyperlinks that you gave but I do thank you for looking out for me. I didn’t think that installing a widget or add-on would turn into a widget bomb for everyone else so I apologies for that, I’m still trying to rap my head around WP. Do you know if WP.com actively looks for new widgets or do they mostly wright them themselves? Just curious as to how open they are to suggestions and where would I post the code for them, here in the forums or eMail? WP is allot more user friendly than most CMS programs out there and I am surprised at how much you can do with it. Once again, sorry for trying to turn myWP into Frankenpress.LOL

P.S. How did you give yourself that spiffy avatar? I have this stupid snowflake mandelbrot thing going on. Do I have to do it in my Control panel? This forum is a bit different from most forums.

Hello again,
As for which widgets Staff may or may not be considering introducing we Volunteers ie. your fellow bloggers don’t have a clue what tomorrow or the next day may hold in terms of new features, widgets, themes, etc.If you have specific widgets you would like to see Staff introduce you can contact them directly > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
If you know of a Flash widget you need to be converted to gigya code so you can use it post the code for it here between backtick ( ` ) characters.
On a personal note: As for me I’m a theme minimalist and blogging purist who abhors sidebar”tat”. I know that page loading time is a page ranking factor and I want my blog to load in less than 3 seconds flat. That means I use as few widgets as possible on my blogs.

Thanks for the help and advise, and I see your point about load time and minimalist pages but I am new to blogging and although I have things to say, I’m not that great of a writer yet, if ever? I was hopeing to put up a site that would be like a what’s new and a magazine for Off Course Golfing, so it will require photo’s and things like that.
Well…..off to read more stuff -john
