New WordPress site, domain and hosting already bought

We already have a domain name and hosting for our current website. The website however was developed in a very inflexible CMS and we think that a WordPress theme would look a lot more modern and user-friendly. How would I create a dev site in WordPress and then set as the live one? Does it matter that we already have a domain and hosting – what WordPress plan would I need?

    Hello @communications93d07933c8,

I will address all you question to the best of my ability.

we think that a WordPress theme would look a lot more modern and user-friendly.

I completely second that. The look and style of the site is key to any website. A theme can very much determine the face of your site. WordPress.com offers the best responsive themes here. WordPress.com’s Theme Showcase is full of 290 different designs, layouts, and color schemes to suit your site’s needs. And, definitely user-friendly.

How would I create a dev site in WordPress and then set as the live one?

Yes you can. It is recommended to create a free site and start adding content, themes etc…and then bring your domain and hosting over to WordPress.com. You can build your rough draft here on your free WordPress.com site with an address containing (a .wordpress.com or other extensions). When you feel ready to switch your domain to your WordPress.com, your domain can either be mapped or transferred. This way your current site (if any) remains online while you are working on your draft site on WordPress.com.

Does it matter that we already have a domain and hosting – what WordPress plan would I need?

Most third party domains and hosting can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com. Custom domains are a feature of paid plans and the domain credit included would cover the cost of one of the options above.

What WordPress.com plan you need is left for you to decide depending on your sites business needs. You can compare the plan prices and their features here:

Also please know that in order to map or transfer your domain and hosting over to WordPress.com requires a plan upgrade above the personal plan.

I hope this covers most of your questions. Please fee free to write back, if you feel I might have missed out on anything you need. Happy to help.

Please note that you cannot map or transfer a domain over to WordPress.com with a free plan. However, you can start building your site on a free WordPress.com plan as advised in the beginning of this post. Once you feel ready with the site; you can upgrade to a plan and then transfer or map your domain.
