New WordPress theme

    Hi there – I wonder if you can help answer my query – I am the IT Officer for a small UK academic association (UKABS – UK Association for Buddhist Studies) and our current website is a WordPress one. We have hired a developer to help sort out our website and they have used a different WordPress theme than the one we currently have and we wondered, if there are currently any cots to WordPress, whether it is possible to simply transfer over to the new theme and carry on with whatever arrangement was made with WordPress? We will be keeping the same domain name (www.ukabs.org.uk). Our domain is hosted by 123-Reg. Any advice would be gratefully received!

    Hi Pema,

    Do you have the name of the WordPress theme that your developer used? Also, did they make customisations to its code?

    It’s worth noting that there are two types of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

    WordPress.com is a hosting service where you can activate any of the themes available in our repository. We handle many of the technical aspects of running a site on your behalf, which leaves you free to focus on the content you create. It is, however, not possible to upload third-party themes or edit backend code.

    WordPress.org is the place you go to download the core software that we’re built on. It can be used with any host outside of WordPress.com, for example Bluehost or Pressable. Hosting your site elsewhere comes with some more responsibility, however, you also have the ability to upload any third-party or custom theme of your choice.

    If your developer is using a theme from outside the WordPress.com repository or if they have created a custom theme for you, then WordPress.org may be the better solution for you.

    You can move your existing WordPress.com site at ukabs.org.uk to a new host by following the steps listed here:

    https://move.wordpress.com/

    As both your domain and site would be hosted elsewhere, it would no longer be necessary for you to pay anything towards WordPress.com.
