New WordPress Website on existing Domain
-
Hi there,
I just received the responsibility for the maintenance of an existing website, which is currently hosted by Joomla. The website is completely outdated and I decided that updating everything is probably more work than just building a new website from scratch, for that I would like to use wordpress but I need to conserve the existing domain. So is there a way of ‘freeing’ the domain from Joomla and then starting a new website with this domain on wordpress? (I read about the plug in method, but that would simply insert the old website into wordpress and that is not what I am looking for)
Thanks in advance
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there
Do you want to map an existing domain to a site here at WordPress.com?You will need a paid plan in order to do this, but the process is fairly straightforward.
If you are wanting to move the domain from Joomia to another self hosted (NOT at WordPress.com) blog, you will need to coordinate that with the other hosting provider(s).

Thank you for the quick response dave, if I map an existing domain to a site at WordPress would I have to pay for the existing host and a paid plan at WordPress? Basically, I just want to build a completely new Website using WordPress on an existing domain that is currently hosted by Joomla.
Thanks for your help. -
hi
If you want to do it all at Joomia then no, you do not need to do anything with WordPress.com.The folks at Joomia will be able to help you point the domain to the new site hosted at Joomia once you have it ready.
It is easy to be confused by the whole WordPress naming thing. The WordPress software is written and maintained by the WordPress.org community, and is the blogging software that is used by over 25% of the web! Because of their commitment to Open Source code, ease of use, and popularity, WordPress software is installed by many hosting providers like Joomia for use by their subscribers.
Automattic owns the hosting service known to us as WordPress.com.
BUT the software that you are using on your self hosted blog has no real connection with WordPress.com, beyond the name. They don’t talk to each other (even though they are on good terms). You don’t need to read this since everything you want to do happens at Joomia, but this document explains some of the differences.
Hope that helped!

Hi Dave, thank you this al makes sense. As I had made good experiences with WordPress in the past by using their templates and stuff and have no expertise with Joomla I had the intention of when building a new website to do it with WordPress, that’s why I was wondering about the switch.
