New WP Admin Search is stupid
-
Searching for posts on the older WP-admin is straightforward as it shows relevant results. For example, posts with the exact word match as the search query appear first whereas the new WP-admin just displays all posts containing the keyword in a seemingly random order making it a nightmare to search within the results. This is especially frustrating in blogs with 1000+ posts as it just gives another list of 100 topics to search through making the search function practically useless. Is there any setting/toggle that I’m missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your website. However, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted elsewhere.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

No, the site itself is fine. My issue applies to WordPress.com hosted websites as well. The new WP-Dashboard’s search function is unusable as there’s no logical sorting of search results when searching for posts/pages.
Here’s a comparison for clarity: WP Dashboard search: Old vs New
As you can see in the screenshots, the newer WP Dashboard does not sort search results on the basis of relevance making it impossible to search for topics in blogs with a high number of posts/pages as search gives multiple results. On the older WP Dashboard search results are sorted on the basis of relevance, like posts containing the keyword on the title appear first for example.

If you want to use wp-admin view here on WordPress.com, you can click the “screen options” in the upper right of your screen and choose “Classic View” – here’s a screenshot of what you want to choose: https://d.pr/i/YKnhHc
That should give you the view you’re looking for. Hope that helps!

I am aware of the option to switch between the two. Due to browser compatibility issues I’ve recently moved to the WordPress desktop app which uses the newer interface. Is there any option to switch in the app as well?
-
The desktop app cannot display WP-Admin pages, no. If you attempt to access a WP-Admin page from the menu in the app, that page will be opened in your browser instead.
The desktop app is essentially the WordPress.com web app/interface running in an app container on your computer, and WP-Admin is something separate from our web app.

Thank you for clarifying, really. I appreciate you guys taking the time. Is there any way I could raise this issue to the developent team?
-
This is for the search issue, right? We can open a bug report for that.
I’ve been doing some testing, and I’m not able to replicate the issue on my own sites, either WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected. So I’d first like to rule out an issue with your site, and specifically the Jetpack-connection.
I’ve scheduled a full sync of Jetpack to your site, to make sure we have the most current data on our end. Please give that a couple hours to complete, and let us know if you still get the same search results.
Can you also please let us know if this happens on any of your WordPress.com sites? Please give the URL of the site, and one or two search terms that aren’t bringing up the expected result.
As far as I know, the WP-Admin search works similarly to the search widget, in that it first shows results where the search term appears in the post title, and then results where the search term appears in the post content, with results displayed most-recent first under each group.

It looks like the WordPress.com posts screen might not make that distinction, which may or may not be intentional. But it would help if we have a few more examples before taking this to our developers.

Yes, I encounter the same issues on my other sites.
Please give the URL of the site, and one or two search terms that aren’t bringing up the expected result.

WP Dashboard (debooWORKS) | Old vs New: The screenshots show 2 search terms, ‘Problem’ & ‘Silence’ out of which the 2nd search query showed results in the correct order. Kindly note that it is an exception, rather than the norm from my experience in dealing with the WP dashboard.

Yes, that’s my issue. But note that the new dashboard still gives correct results sometimes as shown in my recent screenshot (specifically the one with the search query ‘Silence’ on debooworks.wordpress.com, so your mileage may vary. However, also note that it is an exception, rather than the norm from my experience in dealing with the WP dashboard.

That’s an excellent catch! Thanks for spotting that.
I honestly don’t know if this difference in how Search is treated has always been there, or if something might have broken along the way, but I’ve asked our developers about this. Once I hear back from them, I can either open a bug report to have this fixed, or create a feature request to have this improved, depending on what they say.
I’ll let you know once I have more information.

I have recently started to block again. My problem is if I want to search for an older published blog I don’t seem to be able to enter the name of the blog and thereby find what I’m looking for. Are used to be very simple but not any more. Am I doing something wrong? I also noticed that while there are 960+ published posts only 48 come up. Again, my question is am I doing something wrong. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi @judithhb,
I don’t know if this is related to the issue that @debooworks is having, so I need you to let me know the address of the blog you’re working on and some of the search terms that you’re using.
