newb question – advantages of hosting outside wordpress
-
Hi
wondering if you might be able to help me? I’ve just recently created my WordPress blog and at this stage have hosted it on the WordPress web site. I seem to be quickly discovering that (it appears) that there are limitations to what I can do with my blog whilst it is not ‘personally’ hosted. As an example – I wanted to resize my photos I was putting up on my blog but it seems that there are only a few ‘small medium large’ options – I want to customize the size of my images. I’m discovering these things called ‘plugins’ which extend the functionality of what you can do with your site but my husband tells me I have to ‘FTP my plugins onto my site!’ Do you do this or is it just not that complex?
So to put it in a nutshell:
Do you get lots more options by hosting your website outside of WordPress?
If so – do you have to do all the ‘plugins’ and FTP stuff? Thanks!
Carolyn

If you have not read this forum sticky about the two types of blogs you mention, it will answer many of your questions:

You ask: Do you get lots more options by hosting your website outside of WordPress?
If so – do you have to do all the ‘plugins’ and FTP stuff?#1 – Yes, but you (one) also get headaches as all upgrades, maintenance and trouble shooting is the responsibility of the blogger.
#2 – No, you would not be obligated to use plugins or “ftp stuff.”
If your question is, would you be the one responsible for executing those options, then the answer is yes. Nobody does anything for you when your blog is independently-hosted. -

Thanks ellaella – so, if I used wordpress.org would I be able to do things like have complete control over the size of my images as opposed to the ‘small/medium/large’ only options I get in wordpress.com?

You have complete control now. Just make them the sizes you want them to be before you upload them. I have both types of blogs and the image uploader is equally annoying.
BTW, you would not “use” wordpress.org in any way similar to using wordpress.com. You would simply be using software provided by wordpress.org.

You can also control the image size and more via advanced settings. I find it more efficient to do everything before uploading, but that’s just me.

The other thing to remember, is that in reality, the theme you are using determines how big your images in posts and pages can be. You can certainly make them as large as you want, but if they are wider than the post area of the theme, it will break the theme. With a self-hosted blog though, you have free access to the CSS and such so you can make the theme wider if you wish, and if you have the CSS experience to do it.
