Hi, before I registered with wordpress I understood I could choose templates – how do I do that?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The only themes we can use at wordpress.com are situated here > Appearance > Themes. We cannot access our template files at wordpress.com, let alone, edit them.
WordPress.com is a hosted blog service. You do not have to download software, pay for hosting or manage a web server. WordPress.com does not permit FTP access and uploading themes or plugins. There are restrictions on the types of blogs allowed at wordpress.com and there are code and advertising restrictions as well.
However, there are also an abundance of free features for the free blogs that are free hosted by wordpress.com and upgrades can be purchased for specific features. Purchasing any upgrade is a purchase for one blog for one year, and does not allow anything beyond what the support documentation states for the specific upgrade.
WordPress.org is free software. You can install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database. Please read this entry so you are crystal clear about the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org
