Newbie can’t change image

I have not seen this problem addressed in the FAQ or anywhere else. I cannot get the image by my comments or forum postings, to change. Is this because I cannot get the Gravatar to change?
When I go to Users> Your Profile and click on the “change your Gravatar” button on the far right, a large window opens that reads “Please close this window if it does not close automatically” Well, it doesn’t close automatically no matter how long I wait. And when I do click the X to close it, nothing happens. Nothing. I get no other windows or options, and my Gravatar is unchanged.
Under Settings> General Settings, I uploaded an image. I expect that cartoon face to appear next to my Comments. Is that right, or am I confusing two different things? Right now I am seeing the “Mystery Man” as selected on the Settings> Discussion page.

Lots of people have had difficulties with the process described in “Support”
( http://support.wordpress.com/avatars/gravatars/ )They even mention this:
“If the popup for Gravatar doesn’t work, you can visit gravatar.com directly.”http://gravatar.com
Be sure you are signed in to your WordPress.com account when you go there.The Settings> General Settings is for a blavatar, a picture for your blog that appears in the bowser navigation bar:
