Newbie: Hosting the blog.

Hi,
I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to hosting the blog. First in a guide you guys told me to host the blog using MAMP, but my Mac won’t be on all the time, so that won’t work, and it can’t be seen by anyone BUT me.
Would you now just upload the whole wordpress folder to hosting site? would it work? I’m really confused. I spent a while trying to set up MAMP, now I realize that it’s pointless as it can only be seen by me.
It’s really not clear what I have to do to get this on the internet. I do know what apache servers are, and hosting is ect, but it’s not clear what you need to do in order to get it on the internet. I would use the standard .wordpress.com, but I want to use my own themes ect.
