Newbie needs help!
-
Hi guys, this is my first blog and I need some help! I got this going late last night but I can’t quite figure it out. I have created a category widget on the sidebar called LETS TALK MONSTERS and I want to add some topics to click on underneath it but everytime I add a new page it goes under the MONSTER GOODIES header instead. How do I get it under the LETS TALK MONSTERS header and why does it say uncategorized and how do I get rid of that?? I obviously have no idea what I’m doing :) I would also like to move the topic titled CAST OF CHARACTERS under the monster goodies header over to the LETS TALK MONSTERS header. How do I move it?? I would also like to make another header for MONSTER VIDEOS and post some youtube clips but it only lets me add 1 category cloud. How do I create another topic header on the sidebar?
Any help for this newbie would be appreciated!
Thanks!

“MONSTER GOODIES” is the name you’ve given to your page list, so everytime you create a new page it will appear there, of course – and there can only be one page list in the sidebar. Categories are for posts, not pages, and you can’t create them on their own: when you write a post, you scroll down to the Categories box and choose an existing category for it or add a new one.

OK I’m getting it ….
Is there a way to have my “welcome” blog to be the main blog ALWAYS seen from the home page? Is it possible to write blogs and have them go into a sidebar category WITHOUT appearing in the blog area on the front page??
-
1 more thing. How do I get a POST to appear under just 1 category?? When I created the post I put a check box next to the 1 category thinking that it would only post in the category that I CHECKED, but it’s posting in 2. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

(You mean posts, not blogs.) Yes: create a page with your welcome message, then go to Settings > Reading, select the ‘welcome’ page as a static front page, click Save Changes.

Thanks dude, you’ve been a big help! It’s only been 24 hours since I began and I think my blog is shaping up nicely! :)

As for your second question, in your blog I can only see two posts, each assigned to one category only, so I guess you figured this out.
Note that you can go to Settings > Writing and set as your default category the one you’re going to be using most. Then you can go to Manage > Categories and delete the ex-default category (if you haven’t done that already).
-
Yep I figured that one out. Thanks for the tips. Can I make an area where people can start their own blogs on my page somewhere, so I don’t always feel like I have to be the one coming up with topics of conversation??

You mean apart from the comments? See here and here – but you should only do this with people you really trust. An intermediate idea would be to create a visitors’ page where anyone can leave a comment. By the way, I think your welcome page -possibly also the other pages you have now- should have the comments deactivated.

Thanks!
I’m having the same problem I was having before. I now have several categories in my sidebar and my posts are showing up in both categories. How do I organize this better. I want the one that talks about the feature film to be under the category. FEATURE FILM IN THE WORKS and I want the Francesca and Yetch posts to ONLY be under the LETS TALK GHOULIES category. How do I achieve this?
-
As with the list of pages, there can only be ONE list of categories (displaying all of them, as you see), so there’s no point in having multiple categories widgets. Go to Design > Widgets, delete the one of the two categories widgets and rename the other “Categories”. The titles you typed in capitals should be your actual categories, not names for the category widgets – with Francesca etc. being sub-categories.
-
I see …. well that stinks! HA!
So why do they even give you the option of adding more widget categories if they all go under every widget category I make? What’s the point?
Thanks for the help!

Good point – don’t know!
Another solution is to add Text Widgets -these can be as many as you like!- and put the links to your categories in them. This way you can have your sidebar look the way you initially thought. The drawback is that it’s not automatic: each time you create a new category, you’ll have to add its link in the text widget manually.

Hey thanks a lot man, I was able to achieve what I wanted using the links. Kind of a round-about way of getting there, but it works. Thank you!

Actually, I do have one problem. I created the story as a post, but the post appeared via the link I provided and also under the column with my other posts. How do I make it only appear under the link categorie I have created? I tried making it private thinking the link would still work but that didn’t work. I also tried to unpublish it but provide the link and that didn’t work. Any other ideas? If you check out my site, you will see that the mad monster party movie story appears twice.
-
I ended up created a new blog just to link to. If you click on my post about the Mad Monster Party movie on my blog you will see that it takes you to my other site which I linked to.
If anyone has a better way to do this, please let me know, because I really don’t know what I’m doing !!! :)
