Newbie question: Am I taking the right approach in doing a new website?

    I am looking to replace my existing non-WordPress website with a nicer version using WordPress.

    I’ve started a site on WordPress.com, with the expectation that I would finish the design and then port it to my domain.

    Is this really the way to go? Will my blog have greater flexibility (than allowed by WordPress.com) when I move it? Should I just start with WordPress.org? Can I use WordPress.org without taking down my existing site?

    Any help and advice greatly appreciated.
