Newbie: Trackbacks and Pings on WordPress.com

    Hey All,

I’m somewhat new here, and am looking for some advice. I have a blog (derivative.wordpress.com), using the PressRow template. I have not paid for CSS upgrades (because I’m scared of code, however much I want to play with my theme). My concerns are based on http://derivative.wordpress.com/2007/06/03/in-defense-of-daniel-libeskinds-rom-crystal/

I just received my first pingback yesterday, and it showed as a comment. I notice that other blogs have actual area that notify the reader that “x trackbacks” or “y pings” have been counted, etc. Is there a way to do that on WordPress.com (with any of the themes, but PRessRow or Cutlines if possible), or do I have to upgrade to edit the CSS and install something myself? The pingback looks like a garish piece of spam as a comment, and I’d rather have something a little more… aesthetically pleasing…

    Thanks.

pingbacks and trackbacks are very common and readers can definitely tell between spam and these. right now, the free wp.com features do not show count of ping/trackbacks, but if i’m not wrong that would be possible with css upgrade. of course, then you’ll have to face your fear of code!

I am always intrigued by pingbacks, and since they function as a link to the linker’s blog, they’re a built in incentive for people to be linking to you. It’s a very powerful thing, and I wouldn’t discourage it.

It would help the techies to give you a workaround (assuming one is possible) if you could post a link to a blog where you see this feature. It sounds like the kind of thing that could be built into a template by the designer, but I don’t know of any that have it right now. You could always edit the post to include the number of trackbacks in the last line.

The only thing I know that would show this is the Technorati trackback widget, and that doesn’t work in WordPress.com because of the javascript. Basically, dynamic things won’t usually work, and widgets can’t be specific to posts anyway.

Sorry – maybe I was mistaken then. I was thinking of something like what the blog at http://myjourneywithaids.wordpress.com/2007/06/04/rom-crystal-a-must-see/ shows at “actions” with a “trackback” link…. Would something like that require to me hack things out with the CSS editor?

thanks for dealing with my dimwittedness here…
