Newbie trouble posting first blog post

  I am fairly new to wordpress… actually absolutely new. I am unable to figure out why the post i copied and pasted from MS word 2007 has the extra spaces and non-showing bullet points. The formatting is whacky and I didn’t do any of it on purpose except cut and past my document through the “paste from Word” button.

  please help!

  Don’t paste from MS Word. MS Word does not speak HTML (the language of the web) and it will mess things up royally. If you are going to paste from Word, you have to paste into the HTML tab on the wordpress editor. Another solution is to first paste the stuff from Word into NotePad and then paste what you put in NotePad into the wordpress editor.

  thanks for the tip. not sure if it makes a difference, but I am actually copying and pasting from outlook.

  I have tried both of these options and neither fix the bullet points or the spacing when i preview it. An other suggestions?

  You said Word 2007, but Outlook will give you strange results as well. How things display in your blog will depend on the theme you are using. All the formatting and such is controlled in the theme’s CSS (custom style sheet) and although most of it can be overridden on a post-by-post basis, it takes a knowledge of HTML coding and quite a bit of extra time unless you are proficient.

  The bullet points that are showing on that post are what are coded into the CSS in the theme you are using.

  There do seem to be some extra blank lines between things, but those can typically be taken out in the editor. Although pasting into notepad, or the html tab in the editor will fix most Word or Outlook issues, it may not fix them all.

  My suggestion is to either write directly in the wordpress editor, or get an offline blog editor such as Windows Live Writer to write your posts in. I also understand that WLW will “fix” MS Word stuff so that it doesn’t mess up the blog themes.

  To clean up the messy code I would highlight
  all of the wording then click the eraser
  icon.
