Newbie trying to rebuild previous site from scratch

  My old site died. A friend built it for me years ago but he’s gone now. So I know nothing except that I want to re-create it as closely as visually possible.

  This is how new I am: I can’t even get it to accept my .gif ( http://web.archive.org/web/20131110150453/http://oldmaid.jallman.net/_assets/banner5.gif ).

  I’d like to reproduce the color scheme and sidebar style too. My site is a reference site, so I want people to know the new site really is me.
